Durable, well-fitting pack
Date:
I bought this pack for my border collie for backpacking. It is a well-fitting, durable pack that will go many miles with us. My dog can carry up to four days' worth of food and her leash, with a bit of room to spare.
The pack was easy to adjust, and it does not cause chafing. A hiking buddy who had purchased a different brand pack for his dog ended up buying a Ruffwear Approach because the other brand caused chafing on the insides of his dog's legs after a few miles on the trail. The Approach works well for his dog.
I like the solid leash clip ring centered over my dog's back between the packs. When it's appropriate for her to run off leash, I can keep the leash attached to the pack, and slip it into one of the packs and close the zipper. Then it's handy the next time we encounter other people on the trail and I want to keep her under physical control.
I am impressed by this pack's construction and durability. I've been on several multi-day hikes, and the Approach continues to serve us flawlessly.
Like other reviewers, I pack food inside resealable bags first to protect it from water. To clean the accumulated mud splatters, I let the mud dry and use a shoe brush to whisk the dirt off the pack and straps.
I definitely recommend the Ruffwear Approach.

Dog loves it
Date:
Great piece of gear. My dog is a 10 month old 68# lab and he loves his pack. He will bring it to me when its time for a walk. And once he has it on he stays much closer to me on the trail. It fits him great. ( it takes some time to get it fit right the 1st time ) But be sure that you do not just use the S, M L you have to do the grith measurements to make sure what one fits. I use a med. and it fits great with room to grow. It stays in place. I have not had to redo the straps even after a 12 mile hike they were still good to go. If there is a draw back it is that the pack is not water proof so make sure you pack food etc in water proof bags (water pools inside) I did the 3M thing to it and it helps but for the $$ it should be made water proof. The pack is tuff and handles the heavy bush here in Alaska well.

Ruffwear Approach Pack
Date:
We used this pack to do some heavy duty back packing with our dog (60 k in three days in the northern bush) The dog took his own food and meds. in the pack. The pack sat well there was no chaffing or discomfort evident with the dog. One con the pack is not waterproof so if your dog jumps into a beaver pond the food will get damp.

best quality adventurewear
Date:
My dog licked my face with gusto after I bought her this backpack. All my animals have jobs and she likes to carry her own water and food when we go out for hikes. When she has her own backpack I am more likely to put things in it for her that I just could not carry if it were me doing all the toting.
Her gratitude was obvious and enthusiastic when she saw the quality of her backpack. She literally leapt around the room. I look forward to years of happy trekking while she carries her own food, water, dish(es) and memorabilia of our hikes...
Money well spent.
