This was recommended to me from someone that was fishing next to me. I fish mostly at the Farmington River so, it's a little tough with salmon eggs unless you find a nice pool.
I have had some sucess with them though. I caught a nice 16 inch Rainbow with them and some others.
For me, I'll try different bait just to see what works best.
Personally, as an ultra lite fishing guy, I prefer a meal worm or a trout worm or nightcrawler. Although on Opening Day, these guys had these salmon eggs that were in sachs and they were catching fish almost every cast. I will have to see if Cabela's has this or talk to someone when I go in and maybe they can get it. I like going to Cabela's, my six year old boy loves it, too.

Mike's Salmon Eggs

I was told about these by another fisherman. I have had some luck with them but winter fishing is not a good way to try them. I am sure that when the water warms that they will work well.

Classic trout bait!
Date:
I have been using Mike's salmon eggs for 30 years now and have always caught trout on them. I have tried other brands over the years with little luck. Mike's is # 1 in my mind!

better then corn
Date:
After several seasons of fishing for Rainbows with the standard bait set-up, shoepeg corn and a small piece of night growler I read a report about how the corn affected trout.
I tried many different baits till I had great success with the eggs. I also used a bit of orange power bait with it.
Both are degradable so no effect on trout if you find they strip the hook when you are napping!
