great trolling reel
Date:
I have the 15 L (left-hand retreive) model. It's mounted on a Cabela's 7'6" Whuppin Stick Crappie rod. I use it to troll for trout. The line counter is very easy to read and is precise.
The reel does require programming. It is fairly simple to accomplish - about the same as setting up a multi-function digital watch. The programming includes entering the length of line on the reel. I used a line counter device, (which I purchased from Cabela's). The reel has several alarm functions. Although the alarms might be found useful to some anglers, I felt that I did not need them and programmed them "off", which was very easy to do.
The reel is very smooth and has a good drag. I've caught numerous trout and a few small mouth bass with this outfit, although I haven't been fortunate enough yet to put it to test with a large fish. I am confident that this reel will stand up to the challenge of a larger fish.
If you like high tech toys, this is the reel for you. If you like "old school" stuff I would recommend you take a look at the Abu Garcia line counter reel, which I've also had great success with.

Electronic line counter reel
Date:
I recently puchased the Daiwa ICV 15L it was a nightmare to program unless you use Samurai line. When I finally got it to count right it was only with the help of the local sporting good store where I could put a measured amount of line on. The alarms wouldn't shut off. I checked the add and the ICV 15 L isn't supposed to have alarms. To change the batteries you have to contact Daiwa because it is not an easy process according to the instructions. I boxed mine up and sent it back. Good idea if it works.
