  • A functional, simplistic and durable setup
  • Save money on rod and reel by purchasing this combo
Enjoy all the quaint appearance characteristics of a 1940s reel with the performance and capabilities that appeal to today’s trolling anglers. These are functional, simplistic and durable reels. This retro-style series is the product of recent advancements in technology that have also fueled the resurgence in their popularity. This reel holds 320 yards of 20-lb. test line and has a 3.2:1 gear ratio. Pair the Reel with one of our DepthMaster Trolling Series Rods in this money-saving combo and you’ll have a new trolling outfit with old-time charm and legendary reliability.

The DepthMaster Trolling Series Rods feature guides with stainless inserts to reduce overall rod weight and increase durability. The gloss-black blanks are made of a durable graphite composite with just the right amount of flex and power for trolling. The wide variety of actions also cover most trolling applications. Rods come with EVA foam grips for years of use in and out of a rod holder. Models designed for downrigging, pulling planer boards, lead core and general trolling.

Now I see why it was a good price!

Ok rod and reel, seems to work ok, but I must say I was surprised and a little dissapointed to see the penn reel was made out of plastic. I just hope it holds up, it is good for guiding people though, because if someone gets a little rough with it and breaks it, it won't break my heart or my bank, I do really like the rod though, and overall a great deal.

Lead core pulling
Date:
I switched to the Penn 209 LC after wearing out a O reel with a line counter that never was reliable.
I really like the short rod with my sail boat set up. I get good feed back even with 250 feet of lead core out. A Rapala J-7 still vibrates the rod so I know its not fouled with weeds.
I have caught Trout, Walleye and a silly Catfish under sail.
The short rod is plenty stout and the reel feels like it will last a generation or so.
The rod guides are big enough so a swivel connected to a leader rarely gets hung up.
This reel holds ten colors of lead core and a bit of mono backing and leader.
My only nitpick is a small number eight swivel will not alway pass through the line guide. I bent my line guide a bit to open it up.

lake michigan salmon

I have two 209LC reels with cabelas' 9' dipsy rods which I have used for 1 year. I run 30lb braid with dipsy divers as deep as I can get them. The reels have proven to be reliable with an occasional issue of the line counter not resetting easily in one of the models. The drag sometimes can be inconsistent and jerky but with the long rods I lose few fish. The reels are easy to maintain due to their basic design. Overall its a good combo that holds up to heavy tackle and 10-20lb salmon. For the price it is great for entry level trolling.
