Moultrie Game Camera Tree Mount
Date:
I have two of the Moutlrie 5.0 Outfitter cameras. After reading these reviews I decided to purchase two tree mounts as the strap mounting device on the cameras are poorly designed but still work.
What I did to mount my camera to the tree mount device:
First off.. thanks to the reviews concerning the lag screw support arm of this tree mount... I opted to tap the hole in the desired tree to 5/16" to resolve the week metal issue during install. However the lag screw arm seems to be solid to me. Regardless I took precaution.
I too had the only option to use the bungee cords, along with camera strap to attach camera to tree mount frame. Which would work but, not as stable as screwing camera to tree mount frame itself. On my style of Moultrie camera there are two sturdy hollow support posts at bottom/back of camera. Those post holes on the camera line up with 2 of the 1/4" holes on the tree mount frame. I drilled those two tree mount frame holes to 3/8" to make clearance for a 3/8" bolt.
The inside diameter of the two camera support post holes are 5/16". I opted to use my tap and die kit to tap those two camera support post holes for a 3/8" by 16th threaded hex head bolt. Shortest 3/8" 16th threaded bolts I could find at hardware store were 3/8" by 1 inch. I had to cut the two bolts length down to about 5/8" - 3/4" and I used a thick washer along with that. Once that was done I simply screwed those two bolts with thick washer through back of tree mount into threaded camera posts snuggly but not too tight. Along with that I also still used the cameras mounting strap to help support camera as well. You can use the bungee's too as extra support to possibly take more strain off bolts that are screwed into posts.
I now have a solid connection between camera and tree mount frame. I can lift up my front camera cover and access the batteries/memory card on the side without any clearance issues. I do not have to disconnect camera from tree mount frame to access anything on camera.
If you don't have resources to a tap and die kit then you can possibly find a 3/8" specialty sheet metal screw but it needs to be 3/4" in length or less. I first found a 5/16"X3/4" sheet metal screw at hardware store that seemed to suffice but I opted for stronger support.
I give this product 4 stars because of the small alteration I had to perform to satisfy my needs. Other than that I am very satisfied with this product.

As you already have heard...

I love the very sturdy and easy to use swivel that allows you to aim your camera any direction - on any tree. However, as you can see from the other reviewers, the screw-in bolt broke on 1 of my 2 units.

Moultrie Game Camera Tree Mount
Date:
This screw-in tree mount looked sturdy. The swivel head is well made and the lag screw is approximatley 3/8 diameter. The first time out the lag screw sheared as I was screwing it into a pine tree and that was with a drilled pilot hole. I am going to return it for a replacement because I think the product is a good idea.
