In PA there is a flintlock only season and this gun is a gret option. The 1 in 66 twist means that it can shoot patched balls with good accuracy. The stock was a fine piece of walnut and it was fit well to the rest of the gun.
There are cheaper flintlocks but for the price i don't think that you cna find a better made gun.
I have found that real black powder is far more reliable than any other product when practicing with this rifle.
This RIfle is by Far better than Pedersolis Hawkens or Kentucky rifles in this caliber. Very Good Detailed, Good Overall Looking SmokePole. It takes a while (about 40 Shots) to get it tuned in real good at 113 yrds. Got it Close enough to take a nick out of a aluminum Coin painted Orange. Well worth the price, Recommend it for anybody starting out in Muzzleloading, Or the seasoned Vet.
Received as a gift about 10 years ago. A beautiful specimen of a gun. The stock is excellent and the finish on the barrel was excellent. Through the years it has performed flawlessly. I have the 1 in 60 barrel so all I have ever shot were round balls. One exception, I did try maxiballs once, not a good idea. It's not a tack-driver but I did manage 2.5" - 3.0" groups at 50 to 75 yds. In an effort to improve the groups I did install some Williams fiber-optic sights. They helped a little but I had to face the fact that my 45 year old eyes were more of the problem than the sights. In fact, last year I had to retire the Great Plains for a scoped in-line. Nevertheless, it sure looks good hanging over the door.
