Great gun. Good fun.
Date:
I got this rifle months ago but I just finally got the opportunity to shoot it. I am new to black powder and I had heard flintlocks were finicky. I figured it would probably take a lot of work to get it to fire. Um, nope. First shot lit off like a champ. Triple F down the pipe and 4f in the pan. Out of about 12 rounds fired I had 2 shots not light off and 2 shots that flashed without lighting off the main charge. The ones that flashed were my fault, I think I didn't have enough powder in the pan. The other two just didn't get a spark.
I bought this just to diversify my gun collection. I thought it might be fun to bring out now and then and take a couple shots. I never thought it would be so much fun. I couldn't stop. Can't wait to take it out again.
Oh, and the starter kit was great. It would have been a big hassle buying all that stuff separately. Everything I needed was there, ball started, powder horn, powder measure and more.
I am a certified gun nut I will admit it. I highly recommend this rifle. Loads of fun. Oh, and that double set trigger is SO awesome. I don't have a trigger pull-gauge but I think it is somewhere near 1- 1/2 pounds. AWESOME.
I didn't have a problem with the cleaning jag like the other guy did but I have only shot and cleaned mine once so far.

Cabela's Traditional Hawken Flintlock 50 cal.
Date:
I have not fired the gun yet. I am impressed with the overall quality, finish and appearance. It compares favorably with a Hawken I purchased over 30 years ago from a well-known manufacturer. I bought this gun for my son for Christmas. We will be shooting it this weekend. I also bought the starter kit and extra English flints. I am anxious to see how the frizzen holds up. The one on my old Hawken did not last. I replaced it after one season. From all appearances, this was a good buy. I have rarely been disappointed in Cabela's products.

Inferior Product
Date:
Purcahased the rifle and enjoyed shooting it. Took very little time sighting it in. HOWEVER, when it's time to clean the rifle, well , that's another story. The ramrod ant it's attachments are inferior. During the cleaning, the patch attachment became stripped from the ramrod and is resting at the base of the barrel. Several attemts to remove it have meet with no sucess. Currently, I own a new black popwder rifle that is useless. I've been a loyal custome of Cabela's, but on this purchase, Cabela's you let me down.
