50 cal. Kodiak Muzzleloader
Date:
I've been working with German & British double rifles for about 20 years now, and own a few. I was wanting a knock around double, something I wouldn't have to be quite so careful with and I have had a love affair with muzzleloaders for close to 40 years.. After reading and doing a lot of checking with others who own one I took a chance on this Pedersoli Kodiak. The rifle isn't much when compared to the doubles I'm used to working with. It's heavy, not what one could consider balanced at all, the triggers reminded me of dragging a chain down a gravel road, fit and finish are barely ok and the nipples are terrible. For the price and it being a production rifle I didn't expect a Best quality double.....but I expected more than what I got. I've had to do a LOT of work to the locks to get the triggers almost acceptable. The sear and tumbler were both being bound up and had to be relieved.
I have a lot of experience regulating doubles with the loads so what the heck, let's see where it shoots. All loads were fired with Ffg black powder and my home made lube consisting of castor oil and beeswax mixed 50/50. As mine is an older rifle it has 1-48 twist. I tried RB's first and with 80 grs. they crossed over 3 inches at 25 yards. At 50 yards they crossed over 6 inces but grouping was fine with both barrels. Holes touching at 25 and approx 1 inch at 50. Obviously round balls are not going to make a hunting load, or any other load. The good news was that for elevation both barrels were within 1/2 in. of each other. I then borrowed a mold from a friend that casts a maxi-type projectile of 370 grains. This would shoot slower and hopefully bring the barrels together. I dropped the charge to 70 grains but had to use a .025 card wad over the powder and a newsprint wad between the card wad and projectile before any accuracy was gained. That particular load shot well except that the barrels are still crossing at 50 yards by 2-2 1/2 inches. I have since ordered a custom mold that will throw a projectile of 450 grains of straight lead and will be .85 in length. The added weight should finish bringing the barrels together. If such is the case I will have a knock around double.
My honest opinion.......the rifle is a club.....but it's a lot of fun and I enjoy working with doubles and especially muzzleloaders. It has added to my educaiton. It will be of great help if you know how to make a double shoot. If both barrels are on for elevation they can usually be brought together with loads and shoot to one rear sight, as it should be. If they're off by much on elevation...well, there are tricks but I won't go into them here. I wouldn't recommend the rifle to anyone who doesn't have experience with double rifles.

Decent Double for the Money
Date:
My double .72 arrived under the Christmas tree this year. I've had my eye on this rifle since it first came out. First impressions were quite good. It's very substantial, appears to be built solid, and the trigger pulls are nice. Interestingly enough, the inside of the barrels have a strange greenish stain on the steel, prior to shooting. The outside barrel blueing was a tad mottled if you held it in the right light too. Not bad, but for the $$$, it should be better.
As for shooting, my rifle left a bit to be desired as well. Both barrels shot very high at 50yds, even with the rear sights adjusted to the max, roughly 8" high for the right barrel and 10" high for the left. A new front sight was installed that was 0.100" taller and this remedied the problem. Another issue was that of barrel regulation. It's nowhere close to being regulated at 75yds. Both barrels were crossing well before 50yds, even with a large range of powder types and charge weights. No big deal, as the two rear sights are independantly adjustable for each barrel. After all the adjustments were made, I am however getting the 550gr roundballs touching the same 1" dot at 50yds from both barrels.
Overall, this is a fun, decently built blackpowder double for the money. With that being said, there were some flaws that would likely be rectified by the fine customer service at Cabelas, but I chose to just fix the issues myself.

.72 Kodiak
Date:
I have the .72 version and loaded with 140 grains of 777, .010 lubed patch and cast Lyman's .715 pure lead round balls in regulates prfectly . Some reviews are saying these don't regulate, but this one is puting both barrels using one sight into one ragged hole at 50 yards. I did have to replace the front sight with a lower one as the original one was too high and it shot about a foot low. One other thing is you need to throw away the nipples that come with it, they are too soft. I installed 2 primer conversion units that use a 209 primer and it shoots every time. Heck ,I would take on TREX with this one!!!

I bought this in .58 caliber. I found the barrels to be regulated at 50 yards using pyrodex and 555 grain maxi-balls. The groups were good at about 2 inches at 50 yards. I recommend changing to after market nipples.
