Davide Pedersoli Kentucky Percussion Rifle

The renowned Kentucky rifle was a direct descendant of early, expertly crafted German hunting weapons. It became one of the most common weapons used in the American colonies. Since it was lightweight and extremely accurate, it developed into the most popular American rifle of its day. This detailed, authentic reproduction of the Kentucky Percussion rifle sports a deep-blued, 1-in 48" twist rifled barrel, polished brass fittings and a fine, oil-finished walnut stock. Right-hand only. .50 caliber.
Overall length: 51".
Weight: 7 lbs.

Quality?
Date:
The first rifle I received had some bluing issues with the barrel (it did not take) and Cabela's did their charm and another one was shipped shortly. The second had the same issue as the first except towards the front side and again, Cabela's stood by the product and sent another one. So, I guess the third one is the charm. No issues with the bluing. I have not shot it yet so I can not comment on that aspect, but am more surprised at the lack of quality control from the manufacture. I would not mail order this rifle, nor recommend it because of the issue I had unless you saw the rifle in person.

Cabela's Kentucky Percussion Rifle
Date:
Bought this rifle as a present for my grown son who is a Civil War re-inactor. The boy was thrilled!! Spent all day shooting up my 50 cal. balls, powder, patches, etc. Fit and finish is very good. Don't know if the barrel has some kind of bore coating, but it's much easier to load than my Hawken. Only drawback is that it's not a hooked breach so barrel can be easily removed for cleaning. Excellent rifle, excellent service from Cabellas.

Nice rifle
Date:
Pros: Shipping was fast. Very well packed. This is a quality rifle. The wood was nicely oil finished and free of blemishes. There was subtle figure in the grain. I liked that. Brass fittings were nicely polished and well fitted. The percussion lock is of quality construction and also well fitted. So were the double set triggers, which were adjusted properly right out of the box. At bench rest with open sights, the rifle shoots 1.5 inch groups at 25 yards, 3 inches at 50 yards, and about 6 inches at 100 yards. The gun disassembles easily for cleaning with the removal of the ramrod, two friction pins (one in the brass cap and another in the wood about mid-stock) and the tang screw. I found it necessary to also loosen the lock side screws.
Cons: Shooting 55 grains of Hodgen 777 2F powder and using CCI primers, ignition out of the box was slow. It was almost like shooting a flintlock (click...bang). There were several misfires. It turned out that the nipple was improperly shaped (beveled top) and had too small a hole. Most of the fire went around the nipple. Very little went through into the drum. A new nipple fixed the problem. The point of impact was about 3 inches low at 25 yards and the only alternatives were to either file the front sight or replace the rear sight with a higher one. I chose to replace the rear sight with a semi-buckhorn elevator sight and then the rifle zeroed in nicely. The wooden ramrod had a cross-grain problem and snapped on the second day of shooting even though I was careful in loading. I replaced the broken ramrod with a straight-grained hickory rod and so far it has held up fine.
Conclusion: I would highly recommend this rifle to anyone looking for a quality muzzleloader for hunting or target shooting. An email to the Pedersoli factory brought an immediate, friendly, and helpful response. Parts are available from several full line Pedersoli dealers in the U.S. There will be issues with any new rifle, and this one had fewer than several others I have broken in. Overall I am very pleased.
