A favorite of soldiers on both sides of the Civil War for its accuracy and reliability, the .58-caliber Zouave is recognized by small-arms experts as one of the best long guns of the period. It features a blued 33" barrel, color case-hardened lock with U.S. and eagle markings, and brass trigger guard, barrel bands and patch box. Weight: 8 lbs. Overall length: 49".
A very accurate shooting rifle, however the history mentioned is not so accurate. Bought one to do CSA re-enactments with but found out afterward that the Remington 1863 Zouave was never issued to either side during the Civil War. 12,000 +/- were made by Remington but never bought by either side. So I cannot use them in re-enactments. They sat in a storage facility until about 1961 and were sold as commoratives. Don't let that stop you from buying though!!! These reproductions are still great to hunt with and very fun to shoot. Almost no recoil surprisingly. I have no doubts that I will be able to take down a deer, even out at 200 yrds or more. I like the straight stock and the large caliber. I am thinking of buying two more for my sons to hunt with! Great black powder rifle!
This gun can be traced back to the Zouave Cadets of the Citidel, located in Charleston S. Carolina. True to their tradition of excellance and hard hitting use in the time of the Civil War, this gun is rugged, accurate, and a pleasure to shoot. Awesome results with the 570 grain minnie ball.
shoots very well .accurate at 450 yrds cover three shots with a 1/2 dollar. not sure how it would be well recieved at an reenactment as it is short you know firing in two ranks . I would buy another one. thanx, Frank
