Every minute you spend trying desperately to thread a tippet through a fly is a minute that could have been spent casting to those fish rising all around you. But with this handy, easy-to-use threading tool, tying on even the smallest flies is quick and easy. Just secure the hook on the powerful magnetic holder with the eye perpendicular to the line slot and thread your tippet through. Fits easily into a vest or shirt pocket.
How often in the middle of a stream have you strained to insert a very fragile tippet line into an extremely small fly eyelet. I'm over 65 and my eyes are not what they use to be. Even with glass magnifiers this can be very frustrating to say the least. Well, not any more. Simply place your fly's eyelet near the magnet. The magnet sucks it into the end of a groove. Feed your tippet line into and along the recessed groove toward the fly and ... Wallah ... your tippet's through the fly eyelet and ready to be tied. It takes no more than 4 seconds and your knot tying can begin. Works every time. Absolutely ingenious!
This product works quite well if you are careful in how you position the fly. If you have trouble seeing and holding steady the small eye on the fly this is for you.
At first I could not make it work, especially on smaller flys. But some practice has helped, and am now able to make it work most of the time. It will be a lifesaver next year in the middle of the night for big hex flys.
I did not find the magnetic holder/threader at all useful when threading #20 to #24 flies. The tippet would not thread the eye any better than doing it normally. It may be fine on larger flies, but was useless on the tiny midges used on the San Juan River in NM.
