Rainy's Chernobyl Ant is a perfect terrestrial attractor pattern. Its rubber legs, black segmented body and fuzzy underbody make this pattern an effective imitation of a grasshopper, cricket or beetle. They have red foam tied on top as an indicator that is easy to see under low-light conditions. Per 2.
Sizes: 6, 8, 10.
After a day of streamer fishing,in Oct. (fish wouldn't look up) it was getting dark and I figured I'd try this huge ant out for giggles. I sent it drag free on a reach cast past a big undercut bang and you could see a massive rainbow zip up from the depths to smack it. Fly works!
This fly works quite well. My wife and I caught quite a few Brookies on them in Glen Creek in Yellowstone National Park. I knocked them down a star since most had glue in the eye of the hook. Make sure you check them before you head out as its much easier then.
I fished a small tributary of the Rio Grande near Southfork, CO last weekend and used the usual stimulator/caddis patterns with ok success. I then put on this fly and pulled out 5 12-14 inch Browns out of the same pool in about a dozen casts. I guess those fish had never seen that fly before. I wished I had used it on the San Juan and Rio that were fishing kind of slow that weekend.
This is a very versatile Pattern. It works very well when cast with a " plop " under any cover, tree, or near to a bankside. A good fall pattern , i prefer to start small ( size 10 ) and go bigger ( size 6 ) towards the end of the Fall.
