Cabela's Salt Striker® Cork Tape Surf Casting Rod

These rods are ideal for everything from working jetties to long-range surf casting. Features include oversized aluminum-oxide guides to feed and retrieve line smoothly, graphite reel seats to provide a strong and lightweight platform for your reel, and cork tape handles that reduce the overall weight of the rod. Each action is precisely tuned for launching baits over great distances. Most models now feature Batson Enterprises® SS316 stainless guides. The lower carbon content of this stainless steel provides better corrosion resistance than standard stainless. These guides endured the rigorous ASTM B-177 salt spray test for 50 days without signs of corrosion. Inserts are hard aluminum oxide to withstand the abuse of saltwater fishing.

12ft casting surf rod

The ceramic broke out of the first (biggest) guide after about 1.5 years of occasional use. While I do like the rod, I can't help but feel disapointed. I don't baby my equipment but I don't abuse it either. I liked this rod for big catfish and spoonbill. It slings 4oz lead really well, provides a lot of play, performs just as I expected, and was priced right. I'm trying to convince myself that it was a fluke or that I accidently smashed it becuase I really do like the rod and thinking about getting the same model for a spincaster. I will attempt to fix the guide and continue to use. If the guide had not broken I would have given this product 5 stars.

I ordered the 8'6"model as a combo with the salt striker reel. I've used it almost every day for the past 2 months and it has performed well. It's light yet very strong. I hooked and landed a 27lb jack crevalle with it and I was surprised at the relatively short time it took me to land the fish. Only gripe is that although the upper guides are oversize, the stripper guide isn't but I haven't had any problems with it.

Only one small gripe

I love this rod. I use it to surf cast plugs, spoons and jigs. It is well made, well balanced, strong and light enough for hours of casting. My only issue is that when arrived the blank was slightly bent between the top and the first guide from the top. I hope that this is cosmetic and will not jeopardize the strenght. If the rod breaks in this spot I will demand a replacement but so far everything is working right. I would have sent it right back but I couldn't stand no fishing while Cabela's sends me a different rod. If a customer service rep is reading this, please send me the upper half that is up to the specifications and I send you the old one back. Cabela's customer service is the best I have ever encountered.

good quality rod

i have used this rod in the surf a bunch of times and it has not let me down. I loads easily and has no problem bringing in stripers and blues.
i have paired it with an abu garcia 7000ics reel.
