This breathable, knitted Coolaroo canopy blocks 90% of UV rays, and it vents intense heat and humidity to reduce air temperature up to 20°. A generous 100 sq. ft. of shaded cover keeps temperatures inside the canopy 32% cooler. Cleans easily with a garden hose. One-piece, powder-coated steel frame pulls out for easy assembly and takedown. Quick and easy setup without tools. Sewn-in corner rings stabilize the canopy during windy conditions. Just put up our Coolaroo Festival Canopy after receiving it from UPS. Although it seems to be well made, it is not a canopy you want if you ever expect to have it up in the rain. I suppose if you were to use this in a Festival in the desert, it would be a very appropriate purchase, as the canopy is indeed breathable and protects from the sun.
Unfortunately, however, the word "breathable" is interchangeable with "not rain proof." I stood under the tent while my husband sprayed it with the hose and I got a face full of water.
The canopy seems as though it would be tough, and would indeed be helpful in windy conditions, but you can actually see right through the canopy. It is woven with a tough material with spaces to allow the air, and water through.
I wish that when purchasing this item I could have had more information about the details of the canopy. Research I did suggested that it would meet my needs, but it does not. I will be returning to the store and buying something rain proof.

10 x 10 Coolaroo in the Desert
Date:
On a recent camping trip into the remote Utah "high desert" :
We had originally purchased a "C-man 12 x 12 Instant Canopy (straight leg)" as where we were going to camp had no trees large enough for shade and our "Alaskan Guide Gazebo" is always full of kitchen equipment.
We barely had the canopy on it and ALL the anchoring stakes in the ground when a gust of wind (~30 mph) collapsed it and ruined it. That was the beginning of a very less than comfortable 2 days as our AG Gazebo and our XWT Tent (both without their flies) were uncomfortably hot.
The third day I left camp and drove 1-3/4 hrs. (one way) to our local Cabela's for a more durable replacement. I almost left empty handed as all they had on display were different versions of the C-man that had collapsed on us earlier, but on a shelf I spotted this Coolaroo Canopy and in the single picture it looked like had the structural reinforcement that the C-mans and the Insty-Ups were lacking. A quick check of their web site confirmed this.... so back out to the desert I went with the Coolaroo .
This thing was easy to set up, but most important it is sturdy.... Many more times so than the C-mans or Insty-Ups.... This didn't flinch in even ~45 mph gusts ( It was guy'd out at all four corners just like the C-man was) And at one point barely shuttered when a much stronger gust hit.
One of the things that makes this possible is that its fabric is more like a tight weave heavy mesh that lets some of the air through rather than acting like a sail. This probably means that it will let some rain through, but in that situation we can always go into the gazebo or tent. For it's intended purpose (shade) this canopy is ideal... and very well made.
It's only draw back is it's packed size: In it's carrying bag it is about 63 inches long... About a foot longer than the bigger (12' x 12') Coleman.
One thing for sure.... it SAVED this camping trip:
We had a shady, relatively cool spot to hang out during the sun and heat of the day in the Utah desert.
It will go with us from now on whether we are going to the desert at 5000 ft. or the mountains at 10,000 ft.
If Coolaroo makes side panels for this we'll be getting a pair of those as well!!!
