Jigging for Walleye

Trolling, drifting and casting are all good methods for catching walleye, but jigging is one of the oldest, most productive methods.

Author: Mike Schoby

Pro walleye angler, Michael W. Herrick, is an astute jigger.

Jigs, techniques and styles have come a long way in the past several years. But like old dogs, anglers have a habit of infrequently learning new tricks.

Even though the basics of jig-fishing have not changed, that doesn't mean that there aren't some new tricks to put in this old bag. New jigs, combined with some different techniques, are putting savvy anglers ahead of the competitive pack on the tournament trail.

There are more types of jigs now than ever before. The colors and styles are awe-inspiring and the possible combinations are endless. The Cabela's Fisherman's Series Jigs are a good example of this diversity. They are available in two styles (live bait no-collar and barbed collar) and 25 colors ranging in size from 1/32 ounce to 1 ounce.

The Livin' Eye series is another innovative product. A complete jigging system, the Livin' Eye jigheads are specially designed to cover all spectrums of water depth and come in a variety of sizes and colors. The shallow-running heads are molded from resin, while the deep-water heads are cast from lead. Both heads feature a prismatic holographic finish, shimmer like a real baitfish and look so lifelike you would swear they were real!

The plastic bodies designed for the Livin' Eye heads come in two varieties (the Action tail and the Paddle tail) and are available in nine colors, all of which are impregnated with SX76 scent enhancement for added attraction.

If anyone knows what it takes to make a walleye-catching jig, it's the Lindy Company. In a little different approach to jig design, the Lindy Fuzz-E-Grub combines the best of rubber bait/sleeves, jigheads and marabou. All of these components can be mixed and matched to create unique styles and colors that are irresistible to hungry walleye.

If walleye are being targeted during spring runoff, around stream mouths or in otherwise poor-visibility conditions, a jig that creates a lot of water disturbance and vibration becomes invaluable. In these conditions, switch to the Cabela's Action Tail or the Twin Tail grubs. These grubs are more visible and create more water disturbance through vibration than any other grub available. When fishing conditions become difficult, try one of these rubber-body grubs to change your luck.

Jigging Rods

Selecting the right rod for walleye jig-fishing is a bit different from selecting a casting, drifting or trolling rod. Jigging rods are typically lightweight, fast-action, short and have a sensitive tip to detect subtle strikes, but are strong enough in the butt section to handle big fish and securely set the hook in relatively deep water.

Cabela's XML rods are great for jig-fishing. The XML is based on a charcoal-colored 44 million-modulus graphite blank. Fuji Hardloy guides, Fuji reel seats and high-quality Portuguese cork round out the package.

For other great jigging rods, take a look at the Cabela's Fish Eagle II, Cabela's Pro Guide IM6, and the Cabela's Tourney Trail IM7. All of these rods, in their shorter versions, make terrific jigging rods with features and prices that will match your style and budget.

Reels

A quality, smooth-operating spinning reel is imperative for any kind of fishing; but when jigging for walleye, the same criteria plus the addition of instant anti-reverse and one-way clutch bearings for solid hookups create an ideal walleye jigging reel.
Cabela's Tournament II Plus spinning reel.

One of the best values on the market that fills all these needs can be found in the Cabela's Tournament II Plus. The Tournament II Plus features a one-piece aluminum body, instant anti-reverse and a one-way clutch, a vented, lightweight spool and nine ball bearings for the utmost in silky-smooth action.

In addition to the Cabela's series of spinning reels, the Shimano Stella, Sustain and Stradic are all great reels and are worth taking a look at.

As you can see, jigging for walleye has changed in recent years, which means anglers have to adapt. Those who can make the transition and are willing to try new techniques and products will realize unprecedented walleye-catching success.
