Field Guide Story

Coleman Air Bed with QuickPump™

When I relocated to Sidney, Neb., I arrived at an empty house that I was eager to fill up with my own belongings. It took a month for the moving van to catch up with me. The only contents I had were the things that I could fit inside my car – and that certainly did not include my bed.

Author: Kathleen Pilney

I did bring along an inflatable sleeping pad, but decided a few weeks into sleeping on my bedroom floor that I no longer enjoyed waking up with a numbed arm. My job is to write lively, active outdoor-oriented copy – which is a challenge if my hand, my main writing instrument, is dead to the world.

I might have mentioned the loathing for my current sleeping arrangements a few thousand times at work when my coworker spontaneously, and without prompting, offered to lend me his Coleman Air Bed until my own bed arrived. I mulled over his offer for half a second, then gladly accepted.

Getting the Coleman over to my house was a cinch since it comes neatly rolled in its own Wrap 'N' Roll™ Storage System. The deflated bed wraps up inside an attached flap of material like a neatly packaged Tootsie Roll. Just Wrap 'N' Roll and you're ready to go.

I was impressed with how quickly the airbed inflated using the included pump. In minutes, I had a semipermanent place to rest my head. The Coleman is designed with a ComfortSmart™ Coil System, a series of 48 coils that each provide a comfortable cushion of air between the ground and myself. The automatic pump is powered by four D batteries.

The airbed is made of heavy-duty PVC that's 15% more puncture-resistant than the competition's. I suspect even a dog would have a hard time puncturing the material with its claws, should it sneak in a catnap while its owner is away. And since the bed has a flocked rayon top that feels like soft suede, it'll keep sleeping bags from sliding away while you doze off into dreamland.

The Advanced Double Lock™ Valve won't let air out, no matter how insistent it is at escaping. Even if air somehow gets passed the first valve, the second one would certainly seal the deal.

I definitely had more sound-asleep nights resting on the Coleman than on my sleeping pad. And my arms were happier as well. I would certainly recommend this airbed to those looking for a quick-fix solution to their bed arrangement problems.

So whether you're in transition during a move, are faced with unexpected overnight guests, or simply want to elevate your camp-sleeping arrangement to a body-cushioning experience, this Coleman Air Bed is the answer you're looking for.
