Lazer Supreme Broadheads Review

Your complete bowhunting setup can either mean tag soup or a spouse-frowning taxidermy bill, but your broadhead is truly the business end of the setup.

Author: Mark Kayser

Author Mark Kayser with zebra.

A poorly designed or structurally lacking head may mean horrible flight, a miss or even worse yet, a wounded animal. Recently I was afforded the opportunity to test equipment in an environment ripe with targets: Namibia, Africa at Eden Trophy Hunting.

Armed with several brands of broadheads, I soon warmed up to the flight characteristics and strength of the 100-grain Lazer Supreme three-bladed broadhead. After testing it on kudu, zebra, gemsbok and jackal, not one head showed signs of structural damage, except for the occasional nick created by a punishing bone encounter or after blowing completely through an animal and meeting a rock face to face. In fact, every broadhead I shot into the larger animals, including a 600-pound Burchell's or plains zebra stallion, was fully functional with a set of new blades. The zebra proved to be the best testing grounds for the head.

After four days of no zebra sightings, suddenly our water hole was overrun with a watchful and extremely wary herd led by an older stallion. One by one they purposely came to the water, continually scanning their surroundings for signs of danger. Finally, after the mares and foals saddled up for a drink, the stallion joined them, but as with most of the plains game, he came in quartering to me offering no shot opportunity. Five minutes later he was waterlogged and not waiting around for a conversation with Mr. Ed.

Spinning away from the water hole, he gave me a brief opportunity for a quartering away shot and I quickly estimated it at 30 yards. Upon impact, he bolted for cover, but stopped and began wobbling less than 50 yards from impact. He died quickly seconds later. Upon examination, the arrow had entered him midway through the paunch and tunneled through his vitals to be stopped by the front of the chest cavity. Both the arrow and broadhead looked as good as new with a quick rinse at the water hole.

If the Lazer Supreme can handle a 600-pound zebra in the Kalahari Savannah, it's sure to do the job on your next whitetail or elk hunt and I won't have second thoughts matching it up against any North American big game.
