A responsible hunter should always contact the state law enforcement agency in any state where you plan to hunt for a list of specific regulations on firearms ownership and transportation. Most regulations are more easily met in a normal car trunk or a pickup which has a lockable tool box bolted to the bed, but the SUV has no such non-accessible area. In many cases, a trigger lock applied to a cased firearm can help offset this concern.
Even if there are not state requirements, it is always a good policy to apply a trigger lock to a cased firearm when traveling. Many companies manufacture lockable, hard cases for firearms transport. Unfortunately, the majority of these are too large or bulky for the hunter's needs when afield. These travel type hard cases work well for trap and skeet shooters, who do not travel from field to field in a vehicle but for the hunter, a soft case and a quality trigger lock can provide an excellent level of safety.
Other security measures when traveling are also very important in today's society. A gun case in view within a SUV can be an invitation to thieves. Always cover or disguise your gun case and other hunting related items if the vehicle is to be locked and parked away from your sight. As responsible gun owners, we must always be vigilant so our firearms, and our ammunition never falls into the wrong hands.
