So, I decided I needed to go to Cabela's and pick up a new dove decoy. I saw several models that looked appealing, but my eye kept coming back to one in particular. The new spinning wing Expedite Air-Dove™ just looked like a deadly, lightweight force to be reckoned with, if it were to be placed atop the proper perch in my windbreak.
There's no clip-on or battery needed for this decoy, just a fairly straight stick small enough to fit into the mounting hole. Luckily, I found a small dead tree in the corner of my windbreak that was still high enough to catch some air current and keep the wings rotating at a pretty good clip. The fact that the tree wasn't super tall didn't worry me, because I knew my prey would spot it from far above.
I didn't have the Dove-Air decoy up for more than 10 minutes and a swooping dove came sailing in like it was going to land on the decoy. The shot was almost too easy, but I took it anyway and many more.
I also tend to use a few other stationary clip-on dove decoys that probably help complete a decent dove decoy setup, but I'm pretty certain that the Air-Dove by itself would provide that speedy-winged, aphrodisiac-like quality that doves can't seem to resist.
Another nice thing about the recessed mounting hole on the Air-Dove is that if it's placed on a small enough diameter stick or pole, it will allow the decoy to pivot into the direction that the wind is coming from.
The fact that it doesn't have batteries is also convenient, because I don't have to continue replacing them. It's also very lightweight and stores away easily in the back of your hunting vest. It will fit on top of any 3/8" stake or the top of a vertical branch or twig roughly the same size.
