Field Guide Story

Easton Arrow Selection

At fist, this chart seems a bit challenging to use, but if you follow the simple steps listed below it is easy to determine your correct arrow shaft size for your individual set up.

Author: Mike Schoby and Easton

Choosing the right shaft for your particular bow/broadhead combination is paramount to achieving good accuracy. Arrows flex when released, and the amount of flex is determined by the spine stiffness of the arrow in conjunction with the overall length, broadhead (or field point) weight and bow poundage as well as some other minor factors.

Luckily, we don't have to determine which shaft will shoot best by simple trial and error. Easton, through years of experience and testing has compiled a shaft selection chart that takes these numerous factors into consideration to pick the right arrow for you.

At fist, this chart seems a bit challenging to use, but if you follow the simple steps listed below it is easy to determine your correct arrow shaft size for your individual set up. (Note: there may be several shafts that will work for your set up - all selected shafts will work well, but some may shoot slightly more accurately or fit your individual needs better than others.) Experimentation with the different selected shafts in your particular bow will tell the tale.

  • Step 1: Determine your correct arrow length. This is not to be confused with draw length, but the actual length from the cut shaft to the valley of the nock.
  • Step 2: Determine your actual peak weight.
  • Step 3: Determine the weight of your broadhead or field point.
  • Step 4: Under the left side of the chart, find your bow's cam type (Energy Wheel or Speed Cam).
  • Step 5: Under this cam type you will find two point weight choices. The left hand columns for both Energy Wheels and Speed Cams are for 100-grain points, and the right hand columns are for 125-grain points. Move down the column to the box that indicates your peak draw weight.
  • Step 6: Move across the row in a horizontal direction until you locate the column indicating your correct arrow length.
  • Step 7: One or more recommended sizes are listed in the "Shaft Size" column.
