Adam and Eve Sleeping Bags - Versatility and Comfort in Camp

Why relinquish the warmth and comfort of your double bed when you can take it with you? Cabela's has an entire Adam and Eve Line that features everything you could ever desire in a sleeping bag.

Author: Sarah Fehringer

Adam and Eve Ultra

In the beginning, God created Adam and then he created Eve. On the seventh day, they decided to go camping, but something was missing. The couple needed a comfortable and warm place to sleep in under the stars.

Why relinquish the warmth and comfort of your double bed when you can take it with you? I have never been very interested in backpacking with the bare minimum of comfort. When I camp, I like to have all the bells and whistles especially when it comes to my sleeping bag. I enjoy the outdoors and "roughing it" for awhile, but I still want a comfortable place to rest at the end of a long day.

When I began working at Cabela's, I was assigned to write a product review on a sleeping bag. Since I was planning to camp this summer, I spoke to Curt Dinges, Camping Purchasing Specialist, and checked out the Ultra Deluxe and Ultimate Adam and Eve™ sleeping bag sets for a field-test.

I first tested the Ultra Deluxe Adam and Eve sleeping bags from Cabela's. I thought, what a great deal -- two sleeping bags that could be zipped together to create a comfortable and warm place to sleep much like my bed at home.

What Snow - It's May Right?
To kick off the summer, my sister and I decided to take a trip to Yellowstone National Park. Since we already had very busy summers scheduled, the only time we were able to go was in the middle of May. We knew it would still be chilly in Yellowstone this time of year, but we were prepared with Cabela's Ultra Deluxe Adam and Eve Sleeping Bags rated to -5 degrees.

Like all Adam and Eve™ bags, these incorporate two separate sleeping bags - one filled with 3 lbs. of insulation, the other with 4 lbs. - that zip together for extreme comfort for two. The versatile 3- and 4-lb. bags are great for both winter and summer camping. Put the lighter one on top for warmer weather or the heavier one on top for cooler weather. You can also use the bags as two individual sleeping bags with different temperature ratings. The bags include two pillows with travel stuff sacks, and there are also elastic loops at the bottom of each bag for easy roll-up and storage.

Even as we were making camp and pitching the tent, the weather cooled off and felt more like winter than spring. Old Man Winter was putting up a pretty good fight! We were thankful that the bags were made with double-layered, offset DuPont Quallofil insulation that added extraordinary warmth and softness. We knew it was going to be a cold night, so we decided to zip the two bags together to trap as much heat inside as possible. Unlike other cold nights I have spent in camp with other bags, the Adam and Eve bags had no annoying cold spots or drafts. We slept warmly through the night - not knowing it was snowing outside our tent walls.

Worth bragging about
For a mid-summer retreat, my friends and I decided to spend a weekend at Big Creek Lakes near Walden, Colorado. There were four of us, so I offered to bring the Ultra Deluxe Adam and Eve sleeping bags and pillows for two of us. My friend, Dana, and I each used the bags separately and slept under the open sky. I stayed just as warm as when my sister and I shared the bags zipped together inside a tent.

The next morning while our other two friends awoke and complained of how cold they were during the night, Dana and I couldn't help but brag about how well we had slept. The bags are insulated with DuPont Quallofil, which not only maintains warmth when wet, but dries quickly. The internal thermal neck collar stopped drafts and helped keep heat in, and the insulated draft tubes along the zippers gave added protection from the cold. We stayed two more nights, and to say the least, Dana and I had a much more enjoyable time camping than our two friends did.

Adam and Eve Ultimate

The Ultimate Adam and Eve™ Bags
My Managing Editor, Mark, and his girlfriend also had the chance to test the Adam and Eve bags this summer, and he opted for the Ultimate. This is Cabela's top-of-the-line double sleeping bag that features a 3 lb., 8 oz. top bag that utilizes 550 fill power duck down to deliver superior loft and heat retention performance, while the 4 lb. bottom bag features DuPont Quallofil® to ensure comfort in wet, cold weather.

They tested the bags on a weekend outing near Chadron Nebraska and were extremely impressed.

"When I first zipped these bags together at home, two things impressed me - the size and the loft of the insulation. The roomy 74" x 84" footprint is larger than a queen-sized bed, meaning all the comforts of home and no more claustrophobic mummy bags to wrestle with at camp. The down bag was extremely compressible and both lofted quickly to trap the most air for insulation. I thought that this bag would be a little warm for a late spring camping trip, but the temps dropped to near freezing overnight and were glad we had the warmth of down for a top layer. As the night got colder, we drew up the drawstring to seal in body heat, yet we weren't cramped like in my smaller backpacking bags."

When asked about other features about the bag, Mark added, "I like the versatility of the 3-in-1 package of the Ultimate. Now, besides a double bag for the two of us, I also have two separate bags to take on hunting trips. If weight and packability is an issue, I take the down bag that packs up small and still offers plenty of warmth. If I want a little heavier bag, or if the bag has a chance of getting wet, I take the 4-lb. DuPont Quallofil bag and know I will stay warm, even if the insulation gets wet.

Mark really liked the material choice for the Ultimate, stating, "Quallofil® insulation performs better under compression and when wet, making it a perfect under layer, while down performs best when allowed to loft freely and makes an excellent top layer. While the Adam and Eve series is designed as a family camping option, the Ultimate is appropriately named, designed with technical materials to meet about any conditions you can throw at it. Now I have 3 choices of bags that can handle anything from family camping in the summer to use at elk camp this fall. I know I'll be as warm and comfortable in the field as at home with the Ultimate Adam and Eve."

With the goose down and Quallofil® combined, the Ultimate receives a temperature rating of -15 degrees, making it ready for any winter camping adventure or any time the temps might be a little cold. For added convenience, 20"x30" poly/cotton pillows are included.

Besides the Ultra Deluxe and Ultimate models we tested, Cabela's has entire Adam and Eve™ Line that features everything you could ever desire in a sleeping bag:

Adam and Eve Deluxe

Deluxe Adam and Eve™: This roomy bag delivers superb performance in either cool or warm weather. The dimensions of the double sleeping bags zipped together are 74"x 84", and the Deluxe is included with 20"x 30" poly/cotton pillows. Both the 3- and 4-lb. bags are insulated with DuPont Hollofil® to create a double-layer, offset quilted construction with a temperature rating of +5 degrees. The poly/cotton liner is as comfortable as the sheets at home.

Northwoods Adam and Eve™: Described as a three-season bag, the Northwoods is versatile for camping at your favorite campsites in the spring, summer, or fall. The outer shell is made of heavy cotton twill while the liner is a soft poly/cotton. With the DuPont Hollofil insulation, these bags are rated for +20 degrees. The 3- and 4- lb. bags are also constructed with the double-layer offset quilting and are measured at 66" x 78". Matching pillows are included.

While Cabela's Adam and Eve™ sleeping bags may not have been created for the first weekend camping trip, they are great two-person bags for the 21st century outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen. After having the bags for an extended period of time, I found out how great they truly are comfortably in my tent, or for lying under the stars, no matter what time of year. With this kind of versatility, I can't believe Adam and Eve didn't insist on having one!
