This very pleasant-to-read 300-page narrative by the founders of the hunting industry's most well-known and successful company (and marriage), Dick and Mary Cabela, reveals the extent to which the modest-born, Midwestern couple has been deeply enriched by the their hunting experiences - from the upland birds of the Nebraskan plains to pursuing mountain nyala, elephant, and the species of the Omo and Danakil with PH Nassos Roussos in Ethiopia (a must-read for hunters planning on going there). Told alternately in their two voices (plus their son, Joe's), the writing is refreshing, informative, frank and humorous, whether discussing in (mostly) affectionate details the personalities of the PHs to whom they dedicate this book, or the effects of the notorious "Ethiopian Enema" that left them running for the bushes.

Yes, greater and lesser kudu, Cape and Nile buffalo, elephant, mountain nyala, etc., are all bagged, generally by both Mr. and Mrs. But more importantly, each safari, each animal, taught them something - about the species, the country, the organization of the hunting - and about themselves, rather than about the effectiveness of this or that rifle or ammunition.

I would have wished for more photos - many, many more, in fact. But that's probably part of the inherent humbleness of this couple (with nine children), whose business started by selling hand-tied fishing flies through classified ads. They share their insights and encounters with adventure, rather than flaunting them. In fact, there's nary a trophy measurement or brand name in the entire book - just the sights, sounds, people and feelings that revolve around hunting, whose greatest power, ultimately, is to transport us back to the "awe, wonder and freedom" of when we were children.
