Antelope Indoctrination Seminars Saturday-Sunday, July 19-20 11:00am and 2:00pm Conference Rooms
Cabela’s will host three free antelope indoctrination seminars in July with Joe Walsh, owner of Great Basin Taxidermy, conducting the seminars. The two-hour sessions will be held in Cabela’s conference room just past the Big Horn Grill, on Saturday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. as well as on Sunday, July 20 at 2:00 p.m. Walsh has done this the past 28 years for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). Due to costs, NDOW hasn’t hosted the event the past three years but Walsh conducted the seminars at Cabela’s the past two years with NDOW’s permission and is again offering the service this year. Participants will learn how to field judge antelope and what is involved in proper trophy care, how to care for the meat, discover proper skinning techniques whether for a shoulder, half-life or full-life size mounts, what to bring with you in the field, and the do’s and don’ts of trophy care. There will also be a drawing for a gift certificate toward a trophy mount by Great Basin Taxidermy for all seminar attendees. Those interested in attending should RSVP to Joe Walsh at (775) 355-7222.

Girl Scout Adventure Day Thursday, July 24 9:30am Throughout the store
Come out and have fun while displaying your scout activity knowledge with this fun and challenging series of outdoor skills that will be taught by Cabela’s outfitters. You’ll get the chance to try your skill at some of the activities including archery, tent set-up, compass and map navigation, fly tying and casting a fishing rod-reel. Open to girl scouts and designed for grades 1-6. Stations will be arranged inside the store with some activities possibly taking place outside. Direction will be provided at check-in. Check-in opens at 9:15am outside by the flag poles for grades 4-6 and at 9:45 for grades 1-3. Older girls will be done by about 12:30; younger girls will be done by about 11:30. Learn Dutch oven cooking and pick-up some advanced tips and recipes for competitions as she cooks pork roast, herb rolls and carrot cake from start to finish. Entire class is free and takes about two-and-a-half hours and stick around after class for Q&A and to stop in the camping department to get started (or update your collection) in Dutch oven cooking. Bell has been cooking with Dutch ovens outdoors for more than 30 years and is the Dutch oven cook on the Reno Rodeo cattle drive as well as a guest chef at Nothing To It! Culinary Center in Reno. Make sure you stick around to taste the food around 3:30 and then follow Terry into the camping deparmtent to pick out your Dutch oven cookware and accessories.

CCW Class by Personal Defense

Personal Defense is a diverse team of NRA-certified instructors each specialized in many disciplines. They offer CCW classes twice a month at the store with classroom instruction of four-and-a-half hours and then use their own shooting range for the qualification portion. Personal Defense offers Concealed Carry of a Weapon (CCW) certification for both Nevada and Utah. Their instructors are extremely flexible with scheduling to accommodate each and every student's specific needs. They use a safe and secure INSTRUCTOR ONLY range and multiple classes are available for instruction including female only classes taught by a female instructor with a female range safety officer. Beginning Fly Fishing and Fly Casting

This free, two-hour fly fishing course is presented by Cabela’s outfitters extensively trained by the Federation of Fly Fishers. Items covered in this class include equipment such as rods, reels, lines and tippets, demonstration and practice of various fishing knots and some basic entomology. The second hour of the class is outside and involves expert instruction borrowing our fly rods so you can learn and practice proper fly casting technique. Beginning Fly Fishing and Fly Casting Every Saturday April through September 10:00am to 12:00pm Conference Room
Cabela’s outfitters, now professionally-trained instructors by the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF), will teach a free two-hour, hands-on fly fishing course every Saturday April through September from 10am to noon. During the colder months, October through March, it will be held the first and third Saturdays each month at the same time.
Instruction will begin in the fly shop where instructors will go over fly rods, reels, lines, leaders, tippets and flies. You will get an introduction into entomology and learn which flies to use and when. The class will move outdoors where proper fly casting technique will be taught. All equipment will be provided.

Ladies' Intro to Handguns First Wednesday April through October 6:30pm Conference Room
Learn about basic gun safety, the difference in revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, various calibers and ammunition available, overview of CCW laws, and basic stance and grip. All classes will be held in the conference room just past the deli and be taught by Vicki Kawelmacher and her staff from the Women's Shooting Academy. Classes are the first Wednesday of the month May-October at 6:30pm, after which time they switch to the first Saturday of the month at 10:00am during November-April. We have two, 7,000-gallon aquariums, over 200 trophy mounts including our North American display at the back of the store on Conservation Mountain, an African safari diorama collection in the middle of the store and numerous mounts and displays of land and aquatic wildlife throughout the store. We also have several rare and collectible handguns, rifles and shotguns in our Gun Library, a shooting gallery, free fudge samples in our General Store and much more.

To be considered, please review the following:
  • Requests must be submitted online to Sponsorships, Donations & Advertising. Written or e-mailed requests will not be accepted.
  • Requests must be submitted at least sixty (60) days prior to the event.
  • We can only fulfill one request per organization per year. Multiple requests within a calendar year will not be accepted.
  • Organizations must be a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity and be able to provide documentation.
  • Organizations must be located within 100 miles of the retail store.
  • Submitting a request does not guarantee a donation.
