A great bait from Rapala that has caught me a lot of fish on some very hard days. It runs pretty shallow -- maybe three or four feet at most, and rises quite slowly. It's a solid bait (no rattle) and casts like a bullet, even into a strong wind. You can just cast and retrieve, but you won't get much action with a straight retrieve. However, this lure really comes into it's own with regular pauses and very short sharps jerks, which cause it to flash over on to its side. With the right retrieve, you can really work this bait slowly and enticingly around shallow structure, and the bass go mad for it! I think it's definitely for the more experienced crank/jerkbait user though, because it's really up to the angler to get the best action out of it (which I personally prefer).
I fish jerkbaits all year, in the spring and fall I use the suspending models and in the summer I use floating models but the flat rap is different, I can use in all but the coldest of water, it floats to the surface but slower than most floating style baits and when you use it as a jerkbait the flash is incredible. Fishing it in clear water will yeild the best results as I have had fish move long distances to hit it, but it is for someone who really uses jerkbaits a lot as the angler really does have total control on how the bait acts.
When first seeing the Flat Rap at Cabelas it seemed like a good bait to use for a variety of fish. I first purchased the blue/silver pattern to try the bait out. At the start of the season I've tried the bait and the bait works splendidly. I've caught walley, crappie, wiper, and both species of bass on the bait. Above all else this bait has become my go to bait for catching fish when all other lures fail. I mainly use this lure for wipers and they inhale the lure like no other lure I've tried.
caught 4 bass the first hour using it, during the day. caught 4 more at sunset. also, caught 4 walleye in a 20 minute span after the sun went down, and more on other times. all in 2-10 foot water off shore in different locations. bought 4 more for gifts. mpst fun i ever had this past summer
