I'm working on a project that requires more magnification than the smaller scope I have, so I ordered this Vortex Viper scope. I eagerly anticipated its arrival and got it a few days ago. Upon initially checking it out, I find significant chromatic aberrations in the green and red range when slightly out of focus and getting it "in focus" at 60x is not that easy, even with the fine focus knob. Actually, it doesn't focus well at all, especially at 60x.

I was disappointed at this, so I decided to compare the Vortex Viper to another 20-60 x 80 scope, the Bushnell HD Legend Ultra scope - but the Bushnell is almost half the price. The Bushnell performed much better than the Vortex in focus, lack of chromatic aberrations, and clearness of image.

Note that in these spotting scopes, there are (at least) four main things to look for:

1) Fully Multi-coated optics
2) Waterproof/fog proof (nitrogen or argon purged and O-ring sealed)
3) BaK-4 prisms (if porro prism design)
4) ED glass (to eliminate/reduce chromatic aberrations)

So here's the comparison of the above, etc.:

Bushnell: Fully multi-coated optics, waterproof/fog proof, BaK-4 porro prisms, ED glass

Vortex: Fully multi-coated optics, waterproof/fog proof, doesn\u2019t say what kind of prism glass, XD glass \u2013 not ED.

Vortex has two of the four mentioned above - fully multi-coated optics and waterproof/fog proof; Bushnell has four of the four.

However, the Vortex is slightly smaller, has a nicer fitted case, and a picatinny rail, none of which contribute to the primary function - sharp images.

But, Vortex also has a lifetime no-questions asked repair policy. How they do that? Apparently they simply charge more for each scope and use that money to fund their "generous" warranty & repair policy. I`d rather pay less for the scope and if I damage it, I'll pay for the repair - or replace it myself.

In summary, I think that from what I've seen this Vortex scope is of low to medium quality but priced quite a bit higher than where it should be in order to cover the Vortex branding/marketing and unlimited repair policy.
