Van Staal VS275
Date:
Great reel, finished up on a 6.5 foot Calstar and she seems content. Smooth as glass and throws 80 lb braid to bluefin like nothing I've ever used. Bailless turns to first nature after a bit of fumbling. You will LOVE this reel. Horse em' or finese them. ..great drag. caught quite a few Striper as well in the 30-40 range on eel and light plugs.

VAN STAAL 200
Date:
The best reel I ever owned. I do a lot of surf fishing. This reel has been dropped in salt sand, the washed off in the salt water and is ready to fish again. I caught well over 1000 fish last year. (2008) this reel never let me down. Yes, they are pricey, but you will never need another reel.
Now van Staal has a self service kit for their reels. It took me about 40 minutes to service the reel. Van Staal web site has a video link for step by step servicing.
Do yourself a favor and get one of these reels. You won't regret it.

Good v/s Bad
Date:
The good points on this reels is it is nearly indestructable. Try and dunk your other reel in the salt and sand mixture on the surf and see how long they will last. A Van Staal will take this abuse year after year. You can apply nearly 30 pounds of drag and hope your pole can handle it because it will not even make this reel flinch. It reels in as smooth under the pressure of a 40lb fish and you will never hear any gears grinding or noises that might come from some other reels. The drag will work perfectly during those long runs 100 yard runs from a large tuna, tarpon, or shark time after time. They do take time to break in, but they will be as smooth as glass year after year. The no bail system takes time to master but why have something to add weight that you don't really need anyway. Most salt water reels have manual bails anyway and a broken bail spring can ruin your day. No anti-reverse, well if you know how to set your drag why have something else you really don't need. If you thinks quality and performance comes cheap, then this reel isn't for you. The Van Staal is an excellent example of perfection and it is made in the USA. My only complaint is that I only own 4 of these gems at this time.
