Shimano's Baitrunner® has stood the test of time. Not many reels last for 23 years. Not that there wasn't room for improvement with a modern, compact design, graphite frame and sideplate, and cold-forged aluminum spool. A Rock Solid Reel

For years the Shimano Baitrunner has been the reel of choice amongst British anglers going after 200lb+ European Wels Catfish , and with good reason - these reels are pretty near bullet -proof !!!!
I use one of the smallest size , that I have had for close to ten years , for all my Pike deadbait work - it is utterly dependable . I use the same reel for hard-running Grass (Amur)Carp - always feel totally in control and the baitrunner facility is vital for the closed bale 'bolt-rig' technique we Brits use for Carp.
These reels are rock solid in build and serve as a fine showcase of Shimanos abilities as reel producers of the highest order.

A Good Solid Reel

I have owned two of these reels (one for me and one for my wife) since 2003 and fished in the salt off the Florida Keys, Florida Panhandle, the Gulf Coast of Texas and NH Seacoast. It has never failed and with some normal end of the season lubrication and cleaning and a rinse off after each use it is still going strong after 8+ years of use. My fishing is primarily bait fishing from boats, bridges and off the beach into the surf. I like the bait runner capability as it allows you to place the pole in a holder or rest it on a bridge without fear of losing the whole rig to a big fish. I recommend this as a great moderatly priced reel that delivers high priced performance.

I used a 8000 for the 2010 season on boat trips, inland and surf. Not one hiccup and still smooth as day one.

I am continually impressed with this reel. Whether for livelining bait, soaking clams, or tossing plugs... this reel truly delivers. When fishing the surf, you never know what style of fishing will catch that day... if they're blitzing the beach, I hope you have plugs handy.... but if they're being picky, you can't really beat soaking bait. Regardless of what you plan to use as terminal tackle, this reel can fish it.
I have a ZeeBaas for tossing plugs, VanStaals for fishing the surf, and Accurate conventionals for the kayak, but the Shimano Baitrunner does everything almost as well, but at a price point that is a mere 15-30% of the price of some of my reels. Of course, it can't take as much punishment as a solid, CNC machined Steel or Aluminum reel, but you get 80% of the big/expensive reel performance for 15-30% of the price. You can't beat it. And sometimes you only want to carry around 1 rod & reel.
