SHIMANO-SPIREX REEL-MY FAVORITE
Date:
I have owned about 6 of these reels with the rear drag feature. The first one I purchased just to try the rear drag. I liked so much - I bought them for my grandkids. They are very user friendly for younger and older anglers. The trigger makes for fast repeated casts and the rear drag is much easier to use than a front drag, even if it does weigh more. The only thing I don\u2019t care much for is the paddle crank, but that\u2019s just me.

Shimano Spirex 1000 Rear drag adjustment
Date:
I bought my first Shimano with Quick Fire about 30 years ago. That Mark IIQ has provided many years of excellent service. I really like the Quick Fire.
When I wanted another reel, Shimano with Quick Fire was top on my list of reels to consider. I bought a Shimano Spirex 1000RG two years ago. I've made tens of thousands of casts with it and am still quite pleased with the reel. Most of my fishing is fresh water. I did have to clean some sand out of the reel after I did some surf fishing in Southern CA.
The Spirex 1000RG is very smooth on the retrieve.
I don't change my drag settings often, but when I have a fish on and want to change the drag setting, the rear drag adjustment is my choice.
This is a review of the Shimano Spirex 1000RG, but I will say I know four avid fishers that have the Spirex 2500 and are quite pleased. Due to my experience with the 1000RG, I just bought a Shimano Spirex 2500RG.
The Spirex 1000RG is fantastic.

Reliable, functional.
Date:
I grew up fishing Shimano reels with the Quickfire II feature, spending greater than 12 hours a day, >240 days a year on the water. As many other reviewers have pointed out, the Quickfire II feature is a tremendous time-saver in terms of getting your lure back into the water at the end of a retrieve, and the fact that the lure hangs at the same distance from the rod tip prior to every cast greatly improves casting accuracy. While the guy in the next boat is trying to get his lure into the right casting position by slowly retrieving the last couple of feet of line, then reaching down to manually open the bail with his retrieving hand and possibly stripping some line from the spool in order to get the proper distance from the tip, your lure is back in the water in a fraction of the time. No joke. If you want to test this claim, bring this reel and one with instant anti-reverse out to the lake with one rod, one lure, and make sure both reels are spooled with the same type and breaking strength of line. Now pick a specific spot on the water within comfortable casting distance and compare the number of casts, and the accuracy of lure placement on each cast, made within a pre-determined amount of time with one reel, then switch the reels out and repeat the process. Don't be surprised if the number of accurate casts made with the Quickfire II reel exceeds the other by >25%.
For those who think that infinite or instant anti-reverse is a necessary feature: baloney. I have caught literally hundreds of bass, pickerel, pike and marine species including striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, jacks, and snappers all on reels featuring Quickfire II, which has an obligatory roll-back of the bail to the casting position. If you want "instant" anti-reverse, then simply hold on to the handle. No one-way gears to fail you (which is the first thing to fail me, personally, when using other reel brands with this feature). For what it's worth, I fish topwater lures, diving lures, spoons, finesse baits, jigs, and during the summer fish a lot of plastic worms; I have never missed a fish because the bail rolled back to the casting position when I went to set the hook.
The rear drag feature is helpful if you're more comfortable with making drag adjustments without having your hand near the business end of the spool (particularly on fast-running species). I generally set my drag for the fish I expect to encounter and rarely make adjustments when a fish is on and running, however the times that I have done this with the rear drag didn't result in any loss.
These are great reels, front- or rear-mounted drag. For the price, which is about 200% what I paid for the same reel 25 years ago, you still can't go wrong.

awesome reel! even in the salt!
Date:
i bought this reel in the 4000RE in august and i fish for salmon in the saltwater and rivers. anything from a 5 lb pink salmon to monster 20 to 30 lb king salmon. i love the rear drag which makes it easy to adjust while you have a fish on and the fighting drag is awesome for that aswell. ive landed 15 pink salmon so far and a monster 32 lb king with this reel!!! trust me its worth the money.
