The Saros brings high-perfomance spinning-reel performance to the everyday angler. The Saros brings new meaning to light tackle, but do not let its small size fool you. Utilizing the new Paladin Gear Durability Enhancement and Propulsion Line Management System with the new spool lip design, durability, reliability and performance are what you can expect from this reel. Testing has shown that this combination of metals is more durable than an all-stainless steel drivetrain, while maintaining the smoothness that Shimano is famous for. The new spool lip design provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design, while preventing backlashes and wind knots from forming. The SR One-Piece Bail Wire has a seamless design that reduces friction and eliminates the chance of tangles or cuts to the bail arm. The Power Roller III is specially grooved to reduce twist caused by repetitive casting and retrieving and its large diameter assists in reducing friction and line memory. An S-Arm Cam serves to keep the line in contact with the line roller even in slack line fishing such as vertical jigging or drop-shotting. The SR-Concept combines the new concept of reliance with all aspects of the S-Concept: smooth, silent and strong. Also, the drive gear is directly attached to the handle, which means power is transmitted more efficiently with less vibration while increasing durability. The Spinning Super Stopper II anti-reverse uses a one-way roller bearing that eliminates backplay. Add in shielded A-RB® bearings, a sealed maintenance port and you have a reel that will stand the test of time.

Shimano Saros - 1000, 2500, & 3000

Yes, I am a Shimano fan. I currently own and have owned several other brands, but over time phase those out of my inventory and replace them with a Shimano. I have (2) Saros 1000, along with a 2500 & a 3000 almost always use braided line.
I would characterize these reels as:
Very smooth retrieve
The slow oscillation wind generates a level spool
A very good braking system
Handles braided line with ease
Casts very well using 6 or 10 lb. braid
No malfunctions thus far on any of the (4)
Dependable whether vertical vertical jigging, pitching swim baits, or casting crank baits
The extra spool is nice - if you want to switch line type or weights quickly.
Note - I maintain my reels on a regular basis - I expect they wanted us to actually use that little bottle of oil supplied with the reel. And yes that little bag of washers does help insure level winding on the spool from front to back . . . I use them.
Some may consider these over priced, but I always try to buy quality as that in turn usually give me a product I can depend on. I have lost some nice fish over the years due to a reel malfunction, but not with the Shimano's I use.
Yes - I did buy a 1000 that out of the box was not as smooth as the others I own. As I told the lady at the Cabela's Customer desk . . . It had "hitch in its get along", which could have been caused by any number of reasons, but it was promptly replaced with no hassle (5) stars on that as well.
I highly recommend the Shimano Saros.

The Saros is for the money the best reel i have ever purchased. I have used them in Alaska. Canada and NY salmon fishing. Never once have they left me down. They are totally maintenance free, super smooth and most of all the DRAG is so strong and smooth. They work great form 22 inch walleye or 44 inch kings.
I use them hard and they deliver every time. Thats why I own a dozen of them and nothing else from now on. They just do not wear out

Very smooth reel. Great for fighting fish that put up a scrap. Definitely put good line on the reel though. far and away the best i've ever owned.
