Great low-cost reel for the kids
Date:
I have found this reel to be a great kids/beginners spinning reel, and not too bad overall. This is one of the best I've owned, and the boys have not managed to destroy them(we have two Avocets)Priced right, and so far kid proof. When they finally break them ,I will have got my monies worth.4 stars easy.

Nice loaner reels
Date:
I bought two of the 2000 and one of the 4000 models of this Mitchell Avocet II Silver reel. I would have purchased the Avocet III Gold models that has the metal handle and an extra spool. The III Gold was not available when I got these over one year ago.
I got them to put on low price rods for loaners. They are smooth to operate once they are used a little bit to break them in. The drag seems smooth and the bail trips as easily as with any of the best lower priced reels. They come with an aluminum spool and bail and are equipped with metal gears. Other than that they are made of plastic. I can see that even the chrome pieces are plastic once the chrome flaked off after one use of the 4000 model reel.
Since they do function properly they do make nice reels to loan to someone to provide them with a pleasant fishing experience. They are inexpensive so if someone damages them it is not a big deal.
The 4000 model is in my opinion a little on the small side for a size 40 reel. I would call it closer to a size 35. Perhaps that is the reason that they do not offer it as a size 3000 or 3500.
If I were to buy the Mitchell spinning reels for my own person use. I would go for the 300Xe or the 300Xe Gold models. My real preference is an all metal reel.

Not good.
Date:
The first problems were the bail didn't line up right with the spool, it would put line from the top of the spool only down to the middle, it would cause very bad tangles in line. Drag was smooth at first but god very sticky and unpredictable. Reel was smooth and quiet too but got stiff and noisy. Eventually the anti-revers stopped working. I just scrapped the real for working parts.

short life reel for frequent users
Date:
I wear out about two of the 500 model ultra light reels per year crappie fishing with jigs. The reels are normally quite smooth when new but the plastic gears just do not last for frequent use. This reel is also difficult to properly clean and lubricate.
As usage hours grow the smoothness gradually changes to stiffness and some wobble usually develops. I would recommend this reel because of the price but just would offer the caveat that it is not a long life reel for someone that puts a lot of hours on it. For the occassional fisherman it would probably last a long time.
