Built to Saltiga standards, this reel is specifically designed for optimum surf fishing performance with today's braided lines. The lightweight Air Metal Magnesium body is treated to prevent corrosion. You'll appreciate the smooth operation created by digitally designed Digigear™ machined gears, seven ball bearings, four are CRBB anti-corrosion bearings and one roller bearing. Dual selectable infinite anti-reverse. Tubular stainless Air Bail®, ultrareliable manual bail closure with bail lock that prevents handle and rotor turning during casts. Washable design with sealed drag system and machined-aluminum spool and handle. Silent Oscillation with worm gear levelwind provides smooth operation. Lifetime™ bail spring.

Mechanically excellent but . . .

Ordered this reel for deep water shoreline cliff fishing but it didn't make the first trip. Ended up returning it due to inaccurate line capacity specifications published by the manufacturer. The specs showed 300 yds of 14# mono on the 4500 but after line measurement was made by physically measuring every yard at filled-to-the-rim capacity, it was only able to hold ~ 323 yds of .30mm (.11811 inch) diameter mono. Very disappointed to hear the mfgr rep's explanation that they used "tournament grade" line specs in the print. Wasn't able to find and verify any 14# mono with .30mm diameter on the mkt.
Aside from the line inaccuracy, reel is mechanically very smooth and lightweight considering its size.
Best part of the unfortunate end result was experiencing the great customer service that Cabelas provides to ensure customer satisfaction. Been a loyal customer and spent thousands without any worry for years. You can shop with confidence at cabelas.com . . . sounds like an ad for Cabelas but exeprience confirms it time after time.

I have recently purchased the Daiwa saltiga 6000 to have as a beat up spinning reel, instead I found it to be almost if not equal to my Van Staal VS275G, which I also own. If your looking for a saltwater spinning reel that can handle 30lb mono or fluorocarbon fishing line look no further unless you want to spend alot more money.

Daiwa Saltiga 5000

I have the 5000 model Saltiga. I find it to be extremely light weight and well balanced. There is virtually no "wobble" as the line is retrieved. The Saltiga has an over sized drum which allows for rapid line feed during casting and results in increased distance with little or no extra effort. It seems to operate best with the smaller diameter braided lines, I use the 20# braided Pro-Line for surf casting. With a 1 ounce weight I can achieve casting distance equal to 3-4 ounce weight on a monofilament line with equal test strength. A bit pricey, but for the discerning surf caster it is worth the extra $.
