I dont know what or why others cant use this reel. its awsome The reel will cast for ever. I am torn between my shakespear synergy and this one. both are awsome...the two zebcos i had failed horribly but they probably work good for others ?. if your looking for a awsome reel this is it, or the synergy 3002. take care of your equipment and it will take care of you.

Ok for about the first 30 minutes

I bought 2 Rod/Reel combos that came with this Daiwa Silvercast reel. After about a year, both reels are starting to show their flaws.
The drag clicker broke on the first reel and the reel tends to stick every third cast or so. I have lubed it well on several occasions so it was clearly not a maintenance issue. On my last trip out fishing, the reel started to make some weird sounds by the end of the day, kind of like a goose call! I might have had better luck with this reel if I was hunting.
The second reel, after about 8 months, started to stick as well on about half the casts and the drag wheel was slipping. Additionally, the lever comes loose after a day of hard fishing, no matter how hard you tighten the screw at the other end.
The only reason I give this reel a 3 and not a 2 is because of the price.

a twisted bound-up mess

I bought my Silvercast this summer to replace my old Zebco 33. Wish I had the Zebco back now.
I replaced the line on the Silvercast as soon as I got it home because I know how cheap of line they put on these things at the factory. I spooled it up with brand new Trilene XT.
So I headed to the lake with my new reel spooled with new line. Everything was great for the first several casts. Then the line started binding on the spool and wouldn't cast like it should. Since the spool is non-oscillating, it does a lousy job of laying the line back on and you end up with a twisted bound-up mess.
I'll finish the season with this reel and then I'll be spending some time searching for a decent replacement.

Nice reel ... but not very comfortable to palm

Nice reel, smooth... not sure how it will stand up over time but so far so good. Not very comfortable to palm (hand will ache after many hours). Overall seems like a good reel.
