The unit performs very well in all conditions I have tested. Down scan makes traditional 2D sonar look like mud.
But as with all of this type of technology, you have to make sure things are adjusted properly. To start, set the contrast to around 40% and adjust up or down from there. If you set it too high, like most people, you will wash out your reading just like overexposing a camera photo. That is especially true in shallow water.
Once this is all done properly, you will see things in familiar water that you did not even realize were there.
Unit does not perform well in shallow water, there is a lot of clutter on the screen making it hard to distiguish between fish and clutter. It does not give you a picture perfect veiw, no photo like views of stucture or the bottom, does not mark fish very well.
