This happens to be a good Sonar. In the Switchfire mode, It gives an excellent picture....BUT......... 1. Forget seeing the picture that it shows in the catalog when in the DI mode.....There is "NO" zoom in the DI mode...If U R N 30 feet of water and there is a brush top "fish attractor" on the bottom, it barely shows.... 2. The transducer fits the same bracket as a 570 or matrix 27 except it is thinner...All Hummingbird had to do was make the transducer a little thicker and U wouln't have to do any unscrewing & caulking for the transducer mount. 3. There was no manual and I had 2 call Hummiingbird to get 1 mailed 2 me.. I actually like my 778c better...... As long as Hummingbird has been in existence, they could be a little more professional..
first of all the guy who says his goes red screen when he hits the pedal should read up on the free download manual. you should not hook any fish sonar to the trolling motor battrey, this will almost always cause problems. this fish sonar is great, i love it and have had hummingbirds all my life. the down image does show fish well just have to learn how to read it but split screen is the way to go. the detail of the DI is like a photo, you can see every detail. for the money you will not be disapointed.
I went back and forth between this and the Lowrance unit. I am so glad I chose the Humminbird. The Lowrance unit does not have the color graph, and that makes a big difference.
The clarity of this unit is unreal. I can count the leaves on a stem of milfoil. However, in DI mode, it does not mark fish well. That is where the graphing comes in. Shows the fish very clear there. Set in split screen and you have the best of both worlds.
The unit will act up in shallow (2ft) of water if there is a lot of vegetation. But most units I have had will do this. Besides, do you really need a graph in 2 ft of water? haha
I do have the transducer mounted on the transom. I have heard of some issues with trolling motor mounts, but I have also heard good things, so i am still undecided. I plan on purchasing a 2nd unit that will be mounted on the trolling motor. Will follow up when I have tested that out.
Long story short....You will not believe what you have missed over the years once you hook one of these units up.
To start with, an instruction manuel did not come with this unit. First time using it, I searched through the menu blind.
I installed the transducer on the trolling motor, using the adaptor. First time on the water, I stepped on the pedal, interference from the TM made the screen go solid red. I called Humminbird, asked for help. The women walked me through the menu, and I needed to turn the noise filter on High. This should solve the problem, I'm told. She also sent me an instruction manuel.
Next time out, stepped on the pedal, solid red screen. Called Humminbird, and was told that I needed a special cable with a built in noise filter. I asked why this "special cable" didn't come with the unit, AND why I wasn't told the first time I called, didn't get a straight answer.
Installed the cable, stepped on the pedal, solid red screen. Now, I'm hot.
Call Humminbird, it seems that in 2 weeks, an updated software is coming out, and needs to be installed to prevent this problem!!! Humminbird knew about this problem and still put this out on the market.
Now, in 2 weeks, I have to send the unit back to Humminbird, and have this new software installed. I am not happy with this company to say the least.
I will update this review after I get the unit back from Humminbird.
BTW, I planned to buy a Humminbird Ice 45 Flasher unit for ice fishing. Forget it!
I'm giving this 1 star only because I wasn't able to give it ZERO stars!
