Humminbird 798
Date:
Spend the extra money to get the side and down imaging. The ability to upgrade software and save to sd is great. I have had for 4 years no issues or complaints. Follow mounting instructions for transducer ,then plug and play....or fish.

Works great! Wish it had a bigger screen

The side imagine really is amazing and has opened up a whole new world underwater. Can't say I've caught more fish because of it yet, but I'm still learning the unit and this new way to explore my lake. I only wish I could have afforded a unit with a larger screen, either 900 or 1100 series. I would not put the 798 at the bow if you expect to see the side imaging while standing up. Even at the drivers position I find myself having to lean forward to get a better look.
A lot of people, including myself, mount the transducer up above the bottom edge of the boat. I put mine just below and to the side of the jack plate and above the second step on my Triton bass boat. This is to protect the very expensive transducer from junk in the water and shallow water situations. Many people will get a standard thru-hull transducer and splitter cable to get depth readings while under way. The side imaging transducer will be out of the water in this configuration. Its probably not going to give you a good picture of the bottom over 8-10 mph anyway.

Could be improved

Like the high definition screen, learning the side imaging and the down imaging. The hardware to hook the transducer to the boat is cheaply made plastic, we expected more for the price we paid. The first time on the water showed the depth over 1000 ft, but when we stopped, the depth was actually 30 feet. So, still working to tweak the transducer placement to minimize the impact to the side imaging and not create another water spray. Worked great when trolling. Interesting to see all the fish we were not catching. Had high expectations.
