Birchwood Casey® Perma Blue® Paste Gun Blue

  • Thick paste works slowly for superior results
  • Great for touch-ups or complete reblueing
  • Produces a dense, long-lasting finish
Perma Blue Paste reacts gradually with metal to create a deeper, denser finish than liquid blueing products. It takes longer to darken than other products – each coat takes between 30 and 60 seconds – but the results are undeniably superior. A dark blue color may require three or more applications. Ideal for touch-up work or complete reblueing. Apply with cotton swabs. Metal must be cleaned and rust-free before application, then sealed with a rust protectant. Complete instructions on tube. Weight 2 oz.

Not the best blue
Date:
I bought this to cover a scratch on my Remington 700 barrel. It did not work well, even after following the directions. I then tried Oxpho-Blue from Cabela's and this worked very well. It was much easier to use, and the results were outstanding.

Good for touch-ups
Date:
It's not the equal of hot bluing. No cold bluing product can do that. However, it works well enough for touchups and for quickly bluing a prototype part. I made a flash suppressor today for my varmint rifle, and the bluing job I got from this product was good enough to use for awhile as I develop the design further. Not as dark and rich as my CZ rifle bluing, but most other commercial firearms are a notch below CZ these days. I blued two different types of steel on my flash suppressor, and I got a different hue from each metal. One piece is blue-black, and the other is brown-black. It's OK, both shades are attractive. My heavily salt softened water may have something to do with that. Metal preparation is very important. Make sure all rust and lubricants are thoroughly removed from the steel before you even start. Wear clean nylon or nitrile gloves. Follow instructions closely.

not bad for do-it-yourself

it works! and pretty well at that.
i cannot overemphasize how important it is to read and follow the instructions - especially for metal preparation.
perhaps the best quality of perma blue paste is that you can layer on repeated applications to achieve the desired darkness . so far, my touch-ups have all lasted longer than any other method i've tried.
