i decided to try and make life easier with low priced charcoal vertical smokers, by making a quick conversion to electric. i'm using a heat insulator to conserve heat, as low priced charcoal smokers seem to invite single wall uninsulated construction...pretty much to make them cheap. what makes it work well is the use of a timer that permits a pattern of heating, then resting time, followed by more cyclical heating, using a thermometer/thermostat to gauge the most effective heating/cooling cycles. it works well.
Bought this Electric converter and put it in my homemade smoker. Smoked a batch of sausage last night. Outside temp was 2 below zero. Had no problem keeping smoker at the desired temperature.
At the front end, stoking my smoker with seasoned wood chips and charcoal makes a true smoker. But once you get that first six hours done and then wrap the meat in foil to have it cook in its own juices, this is when the electric converter saves the day and kitchen oven! Works great for keeping the meat at the right temperature for long periods with minimal effort!
I bought this item to put in my charcoal smoker. It works great. It keeps the smoker at the perfect temperature and cooks nicely even when the outside temp. is cold. I would definitely recommend it if you are tired of burning charcoal.
