I received the Tapco stock today, and it took me less than 30 minutes to remove the Ruger wood stock, and to install the Tapco stock. The Tapco stock is very well made, and it fits the Ruger action very good. My Ruger is a couple of years old and is the 580 series. The Tapco stock comes with 2 butt stock tubes, an angled one for use with iron sights, and a straight one for use with a scope. I would recommend the Tapco stock to a friend. The only negative thing I can say is the Tapco stock requires the use of the reinforcement frame that's in the Ruger wood stock. I had a wood stock, so it wasn't a problem, but if my Ruger had a plastic stock I would not have been able to use the Tapco stock.as the plastic Ruger stock does not have this frame. The dealer selling the stock should make this clear before the purchase. I am very pleased with the Tapco stock.
I had my 182 series Mini 14 complete in 10 minutes. The only modification I made was a few minor casting sprues on the top handguard with a file. I like the extra stock tube because I am already thinking about using the open sights. I am even trying to justify another for one of my 10/22's.
I really wanted to like this product. It looks great and it is also the cheapest way I've found to add top & bottom picatinny rails to a Mini. Keep in mind though that the rails, like the rest of the product, are composite, not metal.
Durability is the main concern for me. The slot where the stock fits into the grip was so tight it cracked while I was assembling it. This left me with doubts how well the product would hold up to abuse in the field.
There is also the hassle others have mentioned when switching over from the OEM synthetic stock. You will need to order about twenty dollars in parts (including shipping) from Ruger to complete the installation.
In the end I decided to return it instead of replace it.
