Developed by the Soviet Union at the end of World War II, the SKS semiautomatic carbine was the forerunner of the famous AK-47 as service arms for Russia and her allies. Though phased out of front-line service when the AK model became available, the SKS was used for decades by armies around the world and manufactured in a number of Soviet-bloc countries. After the Cold War, the SKS found favor with hunters and recreational shooters in the civilian market. Cabela’s offers SKS carbines of Romanian manufacture, regarded to be among the best-quality versions made, chambered in 7.62x39mm. They have 10-round fixed magazines with hinges for fast unloading and easy cleaning. The magazines load from the top one round at a time or by using stripper clips (sold separately) to load 10 rounds at a time. The guns have wood stocks, blued receivers and barrels, and adjustable battle sights. Overall length: approximately 40". Approximate weight: 8.5 lbs.
got my sks several years ago after shooting my dad's and wanted one myself. didn't like the loose feel of an ak-47 as a whole, but an sks is a solid built rifle with the looser tolerances of the bolt so it can run just as dirty as an ak-47 if need-be. you can take off the stock magazine on it through disassembly and use aftermarket magazines similar to the ak-47. it is a heavier rifle, so i'm gonna get a bullpup stock for mine when i get the chance to lighten it up and just to make it look cool. overall, you will not regret getting an sks!
This SKS is an amazing purchase. I purchased a surplus Mosin Nagant last summer and really was impressed with it, but this SKS is on a whole different level!
Mine was caked in cosmoline but once you disassemble everything, which was surprisingly easy, and you clean everything up, it works great.
I put all the parts in a container with mineral spirits to dissolve the cosmoline and then wipe them clean. Lightly oil everything and put it back together and it works great.
I havent shot it yet but everything is in great condition. My stock is beat up with scratches and dents but refinishing it wont be a problem.
Get one while you can. I had to special order mine cuz my local cabelas was sold out. They wont last.
Picked up a Yugo 59/66A1 last week and I am extremely happy with the purchase. It might not be the case every time, but the rifle I got was unissued, unfired. It took several hours to remove all the cosmoline, but I'm glad it was there to preserve the rifle all these years. After I removed the cosmo from the stock I put 5 coats of Tung oil finish on it and it is beautiful. I am anxiously awaiting a chance to go to the range next week. If your looking for a good rifle at a good price check into this one. Good shooting everyone.
Great Innovative Gun! Cheap Price. For all yall that did not know, this is the original AK 47. It was copied by the makers of the Ak and is sometimes considered better. It has a longer barrel for better accuracy than the AK and also has a different type of loading system, that is considered by some, also better than the AK.
To Remove The COSMOLINE..... All you have to do is: First watch the SKS disassembly video on Youtube. Its very easy to dissassemble and reassemble. You do not even need any tools, only a bullet. Thats how awesome this gun is. Second: Soak all of the METAL parts in your bathtub with the hottest water running, and mix some dish soap in with it to remove the grease. Scrub the parts under the water with a wash rag, and it will eventually become cosmoline free! Spray the parts with a light coat of wd-40 and make sure to wipe all of the extra cosmo. off with the wd then respray another light coat. For the wooden parts: Just turn on your oven and bake it. Wrap it in foil and the cosmoline will start boiling to the top and then you just have to wipe most of it off, and also wipe some of it into the wood to seal it. It also makes the wood look really good after. Im extremely pleased with this gun and the price of cabelas. This gun will one day be a prized gun in a gun collectors collection. I also received the extra pouchs, strap, and oil pouch which is really cool. It even had the initials written on them of whatever soldier they were issued to back in the sixties. The gun also had the intials engraved into the bolt of whoever inspected or asssembled the gun, which I thought was just a really cool piece of history. Some other great things about the gun: 1. The gun can be completely dissasembled and reassembled without a single tool, just a bullet is needed. 2. It has a built in cleaning kit. 3. Although the cosmoline is a pain in the a** to clean, It keeps the gun looking and performing as good as the day it left the factory. 4. You can easily buy an after market stock with rails for a scope and change it out without any required gun alteration.
Hope this review helps! I bought this gun kinda skeptical and not knowing too much about them but now Im extremely proud of my purchase and learned almost everything about them in about two weeks.
