Not quite a 5-star, but awfully close
    Date:
Hated to give this great little gun less than 5 stars. It has several great features: lightweight, simple maintenance, low cost, good iron sites, etc. Only two negatives: it jams a little too easily and accesories are hard to find and expensive. Between my son, daughter, and I, we have put about 150 rounds through it. Even with higher-end CCI high-mag ammo the ejected casing would occasionally get trapped in the chamber with the incoming round from the magazine. It took a Leatherman or screwdriver to unwedge the spent cartridge. This happened way more often with inexpensive Remington bulk ammo (I would avoid this type ammo for an automatic).
I cleaned this gun after about 50 rounds and found it to be loaded with some sort of used-motor-oil/sand like mixture. I also found this gunk in my Remington 597 (purchased both at the same time). Must be some sort of protective thing that Remington and Marlin use to minimize damage. Anyway, getting this stuff out of the gun with Rem Oil spray was straight-forward and helped the mechanism emmensely. Read the Owners Manual, but also look at the fine videos on You Tube that show Marlin owners disassembling and cleaning this gun. It really helps your confidence in cleaning this gun (or any gun) the first time.
Short of the jamming issue, this is a great weapon using mid-price and above ammo. My 9 year old can shoot it easily, even though it is not a "youth" model. My daughter is tall for her age and I'm a normal size guy. We also enjoy shooting this gun. There could be a break-in period on the mechanism springs (there are two guide bars for the bolt, each has a long thin spring), so I may change this review in 6 weeks or something.
Bottom line is that any automatic anything will occasionally jam. You may read reviews about the Ruger 10-22 that also mention it can jam. The Ruger is about $100 more expensive and wildly popular. But if you want a light, handy, accurate plinking/small game gun I would recommend this weapon. The main thing with any .22 auto rifle is the fit. If the Marlin fits you or your kid, get ready to have some good gun fun.

    Best Bang for the Buck!!
    Date:
I bought the .22 Marlin rifle for the kids to learn to shoot. I had a decent quality rimfire scope mounted. We finally had the opportunity to take it to the range and it shot great!! Had it sighted in after the kids shot a few rounds. We probably shot 150-200 rounds and only had one FTE. For the money, this is a safe, worthwhile purchase.
