"I was deciding between Minn Kota (MK) and this and for about the same money as the MK 40lbs thrust, I purchased the 45lb MotorGuide unit. Boy what a mistake. If you run the motor for an extended period, the motor will not switch off. You have to disconnect the unit for it to shut off. Apparently this is a known issue, just google "Motorguide varimax won't shut off." Well, exactly 5 days after the 1 year warranty ran out, my unit started having this problem. I guess that wouldn't be too bad if I ran the thing all the time but mind you, I don't get a chance to get on the water too often, but I had taken this out 4 times. (That's about all I get to go out with the boat) I ran the unit in all about 2 hours at a time. What a horrible piece of junk. Go with Minn Kota, you won't be sorry."

Just what I needed.

Very satisfied with the performance of this product. Just used it once, at this time, but in the worst conditions I would fish in. With a 20 mph wind, I was able to adjust the speed of the TM and hold positions. I really like the speed display. This TM is on a 17' Stratos center console. I have it connected to a 4 year old deep cycle battery. I ran it for about 6 hours total on that old battery with no recharge.

Failed on 2nd use

Used in brackish water of the everglades, on the second day the motor would turn on and off by itself (dangerous when motor is in stow position!), had disengage from battery. When I returned home the unit would not turn on at all.
