"I researched many GPS systems before buying this. I had a Magellan SporTrak, so I was pretty set on Magellan. I never have been a Garmin fan. I like the Magellan controls. Overall: fantastic. A little spendy, but worth it.

Some minor issues. Figuring out the upload/download process is a bit nerve racking, but once you figure it out it's not bad. The management of the files for storing also take some time to learn. Once the learning curve is passed for the device, it's great. There is a learning curve for any GPS though. I had an old Topo CD, and was pretty disappointed that I couldn't use it with this system. It looks identical, with a few minor added features.

Easy to use. The size is great, this GPS will fot easily into a pocket. The screen is clear and bright. The case that it comes with is exactly what I was looking for with my last GPS. The SD versitility makes the map storage amazing. Light weight. The use of AAA batteries lightens your load (a little) as well. Magellan seems to have decent customer service, too.

I would (and have) recommend(ed) this unit to my friends."

"I have never really used a GPS before but this is a great one. The direct route for road directions is a great deal too."

"this is a very fine gps unit..the color screen is great...and the maps that came with it are excellant...i had to call magellan to walk me thru the instalation of the cds to my computer and after i purchased a 2 gig sd card at local discount store and easily put it into the unit i called magellan again to upload a detailed map of missouri to the gps unit...once you do it you wont forget...the big minus is ive had the unit 2 months and the rechargable lithium ion battery has been on back order as well as the 110 v wall charger..this is very frustrating....this is my first hand held gps unit...again a very nice unit...I recomend the adventurer bundle as you get the us topo maps(good for roads and streets etc and a nice belt case) just buy plenty of AAA batteries or rechargeable ones and be patient for the rechargable battery..."

"I agree with an earlier review regarding the back cover - definitely not water/dust resistant. Hasn't failed yet, but I'll probably take precautions like a rubber band to hopefully avoid problems. Unit is easy to operate, I'd recommend the additional memory cards."

"The product in general is good. The geocaching manager is great and it is very accurate in pinpointing locations! However, I am still having difficulty connecting the GPS using the USB cable to my computer. I am running Windows XP and am getting a message that the device is unrecognized even after I installed all of the software including the USB drivers. The Magellan customer service 1 800 line is no help at all, I have had to rely solely on Geocahing and GPS forums to try to resolve my connectivity issue which is still outstanding. Also, note that this model does not include the lithium battery or the power cord to charge the battery and everywhere I look to purchase one seems to be out of stock (its been about a month...)"

"I purchased the Magellan Explorist 500 LE with the accessories bundle. The battery life with 3 AAA batteries is about 4-5 hours with the backlight off. The manufacture states the battery life should be 11 hours. I ordered the rechargeable battery and it has been on back order for over 2 months, no fault of Cabela's. The topo map software is outstanding for viewing hunting terrian. Downloading the maps to the gps is best utilizing an SD card but requres some time, patience, and reading to master. I found it best to format the SD card in the gps before using the computer's card reader to download the maps (not mentioned in the instructions). The best thing is you get really detailed maps in one folder the size of two states. The drawback is the software is several years old, do not rely on the software for fuel stops when traveling. The bottom line is, you could spend more money on a different brand with the same features or you could by the Magellan and get stuck carrying batteries around in the field while hunting."

"Works great. You need a sim card to use the map features and it is not included in the adventure bundle even though the software is included. Other than that great buy."

"Good: I really like the size of the GPS, buttons are easy to navigate, like the fact that it takes regular batteries. I'm used to Magellan so it was easy to get going, even with the Topo 3D that I bought along with the GPS unit.
Bad: Battery life is poor. Magellan should find a way to improve on battery life. The eXplorist series has been out long enough that they should have been able to make improvements.
Pathetic: Basemaps are embarrasing. I have an old Magellan Sportrack Pro Marine that I bought when they first came out and I use it on the Gulf coast...its basemap is the same as the 500LE (at least I haven't been able to see any difference at this point). I live on a street near a major city...the street has been here for over 6 years and it doesn't even show up?? I've heard other GPS mfr's basemaps aren't that great either but I expected much more from this newer model.
I really wanted to give Magellan a good rating based on my great experiences with the Sportrack Pro Marine but just couldn't find enough reasons to rate this product more than 2 stars."
