Mondays, June 15-July 27 Archery 101 - For Ladies Only

Archery 101 - For Ladies Only
It's time to get serious about learning a new sport! Todd Hulm, certified USA Archery Level II Instructor and Cabela's Pro Staff member, will lead this all-ladies class through six fun and fast paced weeks teaching you archery basics and beyond. You will learn about equipment, safety, shot placement, and about the many opportunities available for furthering your interest, whether it's for sport, competition or hunting. Each class will begin in the conference room, but quickly move to the indoor archery range inside Cabela's for practical instruction.

Cost of the class is $75 for six weeks of instruction, paid to the instructor. Class will run June 15, 22 and 29; July 6, 20 and 27, taking a one night break on July 13. Class size is limited. To register, contact the events desk at 623/872-6719.

Cabela's Outdoor University: Water and Boating Safety
Drop by this water safety for boaters and keep your family safe this summer. Learn the basic rules of boating in Arizona, followed by tips and safety equipment required for all watercraft. It's better to know and not need than need and not know!

Cabela's Outdoor University will be held every Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Feel free to grab coffee your dinner to-go at our Cactus Flats Cafe and attend the class.

    Advanced Fly Casting
    Once you're comfortable with the basics of fly casting, jump in with both feed for the advanced fly casting class. You'll learn a double haul, curve cast, pile cast, correcting tailing, loops and distance casting. This seminar will be great fun, and very interactive and hands-on. You should be able to throw a basic cast before attempting this class. Bring your own equipment.

    GPS units have so much to offer - if we only took the time to understand them! Join us for an evening of hands-on instruction and discovery on all types of GPS units. Bring your own or check out our demo units to better understand all the great features GPS units offer. If you've ever taken a long walk or tracked an animal for any distance and had trouble finding your vehicle at the end of the day, GPS is for you!

    Arizona Concealed Weapon Class
    This firearms safety training program is the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety approved curriculum required to obtain your Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit.

    Participants must provide their own gun, factory ammunition, ear and eye protection and must complete 8 hours of classroom training and range time. Range time is on Sunday at Ben Avery.

    Class is ($99) - there is an additional $60 license fee paid directly to the State.

    Space is limited. Registration required by calling 928/231-7777. Class fees due day of class.

    Sat., July 11, American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid, Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion Hike

    American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid
    This course is designed for those who work, play or live in areas 30 minutes or more from regular Emergency Medical Service (EMS) response. The course combines classroom lecture, skills practice and role-playing to teach the response steps and treatment of injuries and illnesses in a delayed-help situation. This course is designed for campers, hikers, hunters, fishermen or anyone who spends time in the outdoors. Registration is required. Please contact the American Red Cross, Grand Canyon Chapter at (602) 336-6660 for additional information.

    Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion Hike
    Join us for a tantalizing hike to explore the wondrous desert life at night. Using a special black light, we will search for one of the true giants of the desert. the Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion. See its fluorescent glow under the black light and learn fascinating facts about these magnificent creatures, as well as other night life critters. Bring plenty of water, proper hiking attire, and a flashlight (black lights also encouraged, but are optional). Presented in conjunction with the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation. Hike is limited to the first 50 people, and no dogs, please.

    Cabela's Outdoor University: Home Firearm Safety
    Join us for this fast-paced class where we will present the NRA's three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm parts; how to unload certain action types; ammunition components; and safe storage of firearms in the home. This is a non-shooting class, but a perfect introduction to those looking to get more involved in owning and handling firearms.

    Introduction to Shooting Sports
    This family-friend class will brief students on the safe handling of a firearm, and the operation of small bore rifles on Friday night, and on Saturday morning, we'll head to the range for some hands-on shooting. Reservations required and limited. Make reservations by calling 623-872-6700. All students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Maps and instructions on where to meet Saturday morning will be available at Friday night's class. Presented in cooperation with Maricopa County Parks and Recreation.

    If you'd like to know more about the huge variety of firearms available, what they are used for and how to determine what would be best for you, this non-shooting class is for you. We'll talk and handle rifles, shotguns, handguns and Tasers. We'll also check out ammunition for each and talk about the recommended load for your application.

    Paddling Program for Beginners
    What better place to spend a long, hot summer day than paddling on the lake? Join this introductory class on Friday night, then apply your skills on Saturday morning on the Lake. This is a paddling class (no motors) utilizing kayaks and canoes. This class will be taught by Jay Williams, an ACA certified instructor and all equipment will be provided. Students should be at least 12 years old. No pets, please. On Saturday morning, we'll meet at the Desert Outdoor Center at Lake Pleasant. Details to be provided in class Friday night. Presented in cooperation with Maricopa County Parks and Recreation.

    Bear Hunting Workshop
    In this workshop, presented by Brian Anthony, Arizona Game and Fish, you'll learn how to identify bear sign, hunting tactics (spot and stalk, calling, weapon types), how to identify bear habitat, field judging bears and field care. Brian is currently the AGFD Wildlife Manager in Unit 22.

    Family Fishing at Lake Pleasant
    Lake Pleasant offers some of the finest fishing in the State, and it's in our backyard! Come out on Friday night to learn a few tips and ideas about fishing on the lake (from the shore, no boat required) and meet us on Saturday morning at the Lake to put it all together! Great for all ages. Presented in cooperation with Maricopa County Parks and Recreation. Equipment provided (but limited) and licenses are required.

    In Tank Fish Feeding and Wildlife Presentation
    Cabela's Aquarium Manager will present a short presentation during the weekly in-tank fish feeding. Learn species identification and fun facts about the ecology of our aquarium while watching our diver hand-feed the fish in the largest walk-through aquarium in the state of Arizona.
