Hornady® GMX® Lead-Free Rifle Bullets – Per 50

  • Field-proven performance from a nontoxic bullet
  • Expands to 1-1/2 times its original diameter on impact
  • Guaranteed to work with published reloading data
  • Retains 95% of its mass after impact
Interchange GMX bullets with your field-proven Hornady SST bullet loads without any downloading – they are guaranteed to work with standard published reloading data. Monolithic Gliding Metal eXpanding (GMX) bullets expand to 1-1/2 times their orignal diameter on impact, while retaining more than 95% of their original weight for maximum effectiveness. Tests show GMX bullets penetrate more than 30" in gelatin; its famous gilding metal jacket reduces pressure and fouling for professional-grade performance. Per 50. Made in USA.

Good with limitations.
Date:
I purchased these bullets and the Barnes TSX to see how they would perform against each other for hand loading hunting rounds. I found that in my rifle, Remington 700 .308 cal, the Hornady GMX 165gr were more accurate (2" groups with 5 rounds at 100yds vs. the Barnes TSX 168gr gave me 3" groups shot the same day, benchrest, no wind, temp 58 degrees). With standard Remington Core-Lok this gun gives me 1-1.5" groups consistently, so the all copper bullets do not seem as accurate as the standard lead based ammunition.
Accuracy though is not the biggest issue for me with this bullet. If you look at the Hornady website you will find that these bullets will only open adequately at velocities over 2,700 ft/sec at impact. This is because the Hornady GMX uses "Gilded Metal" (combination of copper and 5% zinc) to make the bullet harder than standard copper only bullets, with the idea they will cause less copper fouling. These velocities would probably not be a problem in the magnum calibers but in my .308 it is much more difficult to not only achieve this velocity but to maintain it at 200 and 300 yards.
Since I do not have tons of money to buy a shooting lab or access to ballistic gelatin to test the bullets independently, I am only going by what the manufacturer websites say and what I observe at my local range. Others may have totally different results. Either way I have shot wild pigs with both rounds and pigs shot with Hornady were neither more or less dead than pigs shot with the BarnesTSX. Bullet placement was still the most important factor. Hope this information is helpful.

No expansion
Date:
I used the .270 130 grain GMX this year, I shot 4 deer total with these bullets, only one showed any expansion at all. Almost lost the biggest buck due to this, so I have switched to their interbond bullet.

Great accuracy
Date:
I developed a load with a lower cost 165gr BTSP and used the same load on the 165gr GMX. One of the writers above said he did the same. I caution against doing that without shooting the GMX; they DID NOT perform the same. I am shooting .308 Win with 42.8gr Varget with the GMX and have excellent accuracy. Anxiously waiting for the opportunity to hunt with it.

I'm convinced
Date:
accurate, retains there weight, easy to load, and deadly. Only concern, may create a compressed load compared to lead bullets of the same weight.
