Heirloom quality bow
Date:
I bought this bow as my first bow ever not knowing much about archery but what I could pull from books. That was back when I was 15 and my arms shook when I pulled back the 50 pounds. I'm 20 now and after 5 years of heavy use I would recomend this bow to anyone.
This bow is very pretty, the multiple layers of wood give it an artistic feel and the lamenation around it is strong without being reflective. The front side of the bow shows off the natural pattern of the wood so you don't need additional camo.
Besides being lovely this bow is a beast of a weapon. I've shot a few other bows and it's action is much smoother than any recurve.
I've bought, shot and destroyed at least 5 dozen arrows with this bow (from hitting rocks and trees) and have never had any problems with it. It took 5 years of shooting to finally fray the bowstring which brought me back to Cabelas. It has stood up to me abusing it. It has several dents all over it from my clumsy self but its lamenation is strong and it has never splintered or cracked. The leather hand grip is comfortable and has an image of my hand worn into it from use. This is the bow that I am going to teach my kids to shoot on and if I break it before then I am without a doubt going to buy another. Happy Hunting.

Snapped
Date:
String started coming apart where wrapped at the string nock after about one week. I did not worry too much about it and just decided to replace the string if it got much worse. After 3 weeks of shooting (about 200 arrows) the bamboo backing came off the lower limb right below the handle.
Looked around some more and read more reviews. This appears to be a pretty common problem so I am moving to something a bit more durable.

Beautiful Longbow, as long as the stars align
Date:
I found one of these in 55# at the local Cabela's in the "Bargain Cave". It was on for a reduced price (around fifty bucks off, but without a string). I bought a Flemish Twist string, had the archery techs set it up for me, and shot it around a dozen times in their indoor range. I wanted to be sure I liked what I was getting before taking it home.
Boy, did I like it. This is a smooth-shooting longbow, and I found it very easy to get on target and group arrows at modest distances.
Now for the bad part. The bow started coming apart on me upon the first draw when I got home. Crackling sounds clearly told me something was amiss, and I found that the fiberglass laminations on the bottom limb were coming up in two places.
Now, I can't attest to what happened to the bow before I got it, only that it came apart. Some knucklehead may have dry fired it several times and weakened the laminations. Perhaps there was a quality control issue.
I took the bow back the next day, and though Cabela's marks everything in the Bargain Cave "as is, no return", they were nice enough to refund my money.
After agonizing over it, I ended up ordering another Sequoia. At the time I ordered, the highest weight was 50#, and I had to wait a few weeks to get that one. My previous experience with PSE stuff was sufficient to allow me to give them the benefit of the doubt.
It was worth the wait. The second bow had all the qualities of the one that didn't last, and has yet to do anything but hurl arrows as well as I'm able to aim them.
I shot the Sequoia enough that I got big blister on my hand in the first few days, and had to shoot with padding on my palm. It's that much fun.
I found the hand shock to be low, the bow to be very quiet, and the move from recurve to longbow fairly straightforward. At a 50# draw, the Sequoia appears to have about the same power as a recurve of 45#, according to my observed penetration on a broadhead target. Plenty for deer, I'm sure.
I elected to take the leather wrap off of the bow, and find it more comfortable "bare". Please be aware that the wrap is glued on with some serious glue, and that you'll have your work cut out for you getting the handle cleaned up.
This is decidedly a "modern" longbow. There are up to nine or ten layers of lamination at work here in places. It may, in fact, behave somewhat more like a very long-axis recurve than a primitive longbow. That said, I find it to be a sweet shooter, and a great first step into the longbow world. You can, should you want to experiment, shoot the opposing hand "off the knuckle" to see how it feels without an arrow shelf.
For folks who have a long draw like me (32"), they may find the longbow to be a bit smoother than a shorter recurve, which would, perforce, begin to stack at those draw lengths.
This is fine value, a really pretty bow, and one that would do the job for a hunter who likes the lightness and simplicity of a longbow.
