dissapointed
Date:
After reading other deviews I ordered this bow for my son who was enjoying shooting my old recurve. The PSE bow arrived with both limbs twisted. I returned it for another and it arrived with the lower limb twisted. They might have been at the bottom of the stack, but I won't buy another.

Great Little Recurve
Date:
I'm new to shooting bows, having only been at it for several weeks yet. I bought a PSE Snake and was so enamored of it that I went with the Blackhawk when it came time to have a more serious recurve.
First, the pictures online really don't do it justice. It is a beautiful bow. I bought mine at the nearby Cabela's retailer, where they let me shoot it before making my decision, and generally treated me well. Let me add that allowing the customers to "see it with their hands" is a great marketing strategy. My third shot was a dead-on bull's eye, and that sealed the deal.
The only downside to my experience is that Cabela's gave me a poor quality string, which was also too long to provide the proper brace height without putting around twenty twists into it, which I find a bit extreme. In addition, the string showed wear after just a few hundred shots, the serving letting go in several places. Above all, the bow shot rough with the low brace height, and there was some inconsistency due to the fletching contacting the shelf before leaving the string. Finally, I believe that there should probably been some sort of protection for the arrow shelf included, or at least a plastic bag with a widget of some sort...
I ordered a new string in 56" (dacron), as well as some rubber "brush guards" that also serve as string stops/silencers. With this new setup, as well as some adhesive felt applied to the shelf and grip/shelf area, the bow is shooting quietly and without hand shock.
I have a long draw, at 32", so the bow, listed at #45, is shooting with authority and speed that surprises me. I don't own a bow scale, but I suppose that the draw weight probably peaks well above 45 pounds with my draw. With a broadhead, it penetrates around 11" into the target, just enough to poke the tip out the other side. I don't have a chrongraph, but the arrows (Cabela's Stalker Extreme 55/70 and Gold Tip Pro Hunter 55/75s at full length and with feather fletching) are arriving at the target with dispatch.
The Blackhawk is a lot of bow for the money. It appears to be quite efficient, throwing arrows in the @430 grain weight with good cast. I would guess that the speed is above 160 fps, perhaps closer to 200. While not as strong as my compound, it's still no toy.
As to the accuracy, that's very much up to the archer. I'm still learning to shoot without sights, but any shortcomings are my own, not the bow's. At best, I'm putting the arrows right into the bull's eye. If I point at the same spot and hold my form, the bow's grouping well at 20 yards. I have several hundred shots on the bow at this point, and find it comfortable to shoot up to around 70 or 80 shots per session. At 60", it's short enough that shooting from kneeling is pretty do-able, if that's a concern for you.
Sorry for the long review, but walk away with this: this is a lot of bow for the money. For a "beginner's" price, you get a bow that would be, at least at a long draw, well capable of taking a deer within 25-30 yards. Maybe even something larger, provided that the archer could put the arrow in the right place. Highly recommended.

PSE Blackhawk Recurve Bow 45#
Date:
I got this bow in May after I had I new Martin Jaguar Recurve explode just after 10 shots. I wish I had gotten this PSE Blackhawk Bow to start with. It is a very good and durable bow. The woodgrain finish on this bow is exceptional! I have really enjoyed shooting this bow and hope to get many years of fun out of it. You definitely can't beat the quality you get for the low price!
