Really a nice coat. I do think that for the money, $50 more buys you a much better coat in the G4. The G3 is a very nice coat in it's own respect. The G3 is made of GORE-TEX Performance, and it's a little heavier than the G4. The new 09' G3 (make sure before you buy one that it's the new style) cures some of the issues from the past G3's.
The new G3 now has the magnets under the retractor's, that keeps things in place when you are on the move. The cuffs are new, and seem to fit a little better. The fit of the hood has also been corrected.
Overall, this coat will unquestionably keep you dry. I think that at this price point, it makes sense to spend the little extra and move up to a better, lighter, and more durable coat. Most anyone alive really does not need to spend this much on a rain coat, but if you have the means, and the need to stay dry, you can not go wrong between the G3 or G4.
I live in Denmark and have my g3 for one year, worn in rain snow wind and sunshine, it keeps you dry!! no wet patches or moisture in the jacket and walking through brush and high grass is no problem, zipps are good and no seeping through, price is highend but here you realy get what you paid for. well done Simms keep making em!!
I have fished with various "rain proof" jackets for years. The cold weather of Steelhead fishing puts a jacket to the test. The others were only garunteed to keep the rain out for a year. The G3 has been going strong for now, my 5th season and still keeps me dry and comfortable. Pricey? Yes. But, you get what you pay for.
