Midland XT511 Base Camp Emergency Radio - Silver

  • Great for base camp to monitor other party members
  • Built-in 22-channel GMRS two-way radio
  • AM/FM/NOAA weather radio receiver
  • Integrated flashlight
  • Clock with alarm
  • Crank power for emergency situations
Communicate with members of your party in the field, monitor news and weather information, keep track of time and light your way in the dark. This single unit does it all. It's an AM/FM/NOAA weather radio receiver, and the emergency alert feature lets you know when severe weather and other emergency situations develop in your area. The alarm clock displays accurate time, and an integrated three-LED flashlight will come in handy around camp after dark. What's more, this unit has a built-in 22-channel GMRS radio with 121 privacy codes, channel scan, auto squelch, high/low power settings, and the ability to switch between PTT to VOX transmitting options. Channel scan picks up any emergency messages from outdoorsmen using a GMRS radio nearby. Don't worry about losing power. The XT511 comes with a rechargeable NiMH battery pack and it can be operated or recharged using the included 120-volt outlet charger, an included 12-volt charging adapter, or use the crank power option to eliminate the need for batteries. A charge indicator in the backlit LCD screen shows current charge level. This radio's battery pack is identical to the AVP7 battery pack used in many Midland and Cabela's brand GMRS radios, so the XT511 could also be used to recharge those. The XT511 comes with a handheld microphone and has a USB port for recharging newer cell phones, iPODs and similar electronic devices. Convenient carry handle on the water-resistant plastic case.

Ficher price toy co. has better radios
Date:
Buddy of mine bought one of these for a camping excursion . We couldn't get it to transmit any further than the edge of the clearing 10 yards away from the tent. Underpowered, Weather and am fm don't pick up signal very well and ability to transmit is laughable. Ficher price toys could make a better radio using playdoh for glue and glitter for a circuit board.

Nice Radio for the money
Date:
Purchased this radio last year...Midland makes good products...we have multiple handhelds...all have stood the test of the rigors of the hunt...I even ran one over with the ATV in the mud and it is fine...Used the base unit it to communicate with all the other handhelds during Fishing and Hunting Seasons...Have used all bands with no trouble, FM worked great in Summer for Sox Games, Weather Bands and scan, just fine...only complaint is no Animal call alerts (We use these to ID incomming calls)
Also a general complaint about the Midland "Privacy Codes"...
Be advised, when these codes are employed, althogh you cannot hear others on your channel that do not have your code, ANYONE on that channel can hear YOU. the privacy code just blocks others from transmitting to you...anything You say is available to be heard by anyone on that channel.

Do Not Buy
Date:
We purchased the XT511 radio from Cabela\u2019s last summer and started using the radio last fall during the deer hunting season to communicate from the house to our GXT900 handheld radios in the surrounding woods.
We learned then that most of the time the radio wouldn't transmit using the high power setting, and the low power setting was only good for transmissions from one part of the house to another. We ended up using the handheld radios exclusively in order to avoid the frustration of one-sided transmissions when using the XT511.
I sent the radio back to Midland, and to its credit, the company sent me a replacement, new in the box. However, the new one is worse than the first. Not only do transmissions fail, the weather radio doesn't receive. Both radios had poor AM/FM reception, but this was not why we bought this radio. Even less important is that the flashlight feature in both units worked flawlessly. I am sending the second one back and asking for either my money back or to have this piece of junk replaced with a set of handhelds.

Woefully Disappointed
Date:
I had high expectations based on previous experience with other Midland products. Unfortunately, the 'base camp' radio fails to deliver even the most basic functions let alone any of the 'advanced' features.
I used another pair of Midland GMRS radios as well as a Garmin Rino for testing. Here are the results:
GMRS TX Fail. Sporadic, usually non-existent, even though the display indicated TX status.
GMRS RX Pass.
WX RX Pass. Able to receive/hear Weatherband.
WX Alert Fail. Received alerts on frequent (3-4 in an 8hr period) basis when no inclement weather was present. Other reviews state that the WX alert is actually for all bands, regardless of region. While I never looked into this it seems to be a plausible explanation.
AM Band RX Fail. Unable to tune in any local AM channels.
FM BAND RX Pass\u2026 sort of. Only able to receive small handful of local FM channels.
Lousy product. Don't waste your time or money.
