I tried using these after getting them and reading that they had up to a 36 mile range the truth in a place you might actully use them is about a mile or two.
Used this in Mozambique in December, from a boat (deepsea) to base (beach). I am not sure if any better (flatter) conditions exist but we could only reach about 9km's before total silence, in camp (dense bush) we could only communicate up to about 600m/Y.Other than the range it's a great little radio, the battery life is good and sound is clear.
These radios are great value for money. We used them recently on a hunt and got very good range and perfomance, just make sure you use GMRS for extended range. Very clear sound and batteries last ages, infact they outlast disposable AA's 2:1 in talk time, and they're a lot lighter than 4 AA's too. The earpiece mic is a bit finiky and produces unneccesary echo sound in your ear as your body rubs against the wire, but is great for still hunting. Just wish that midland sold speaker mics for these, as reaching in-and-out of your pocket becomes anoying when out in the field. Highly recomend these for the money - 5 stars !
I have used the radios for 2 seasons now. I felt that the price was very fair. The batteries have a good lifespan, and the reception has been good. Just be sure to take 20 minutes to read all the directions and you will be good to go.
