In Love with my .44!
Date:
Living is a state that has several long gun restrictions on calibers, the .44 is one of the exceptions. Once in my hands, I knew this lever rifle just felt right. It's light, quick, and very accurate. I have had mine, bought new in 05 and I would never part with it. Has enabled me to put venison in my freezer each year and has never gave me any problems what so ever. Get one, you won't regret it.

Marlin 1894 .44 mag
Date:
This year we had a very good tax return and both my wife and I decided to buy our selves a new toy. I always wanted a Marlin 1894 and decided on the .44 mag. I did some research and read that the new rifles did not live up to the North Haven CT plant quality. The Cabela's near me had just got one of the .44 mag in stock so I was able to inspect it before the purchase. The barrel did have the Remington stamp on it, as expected. The visual inspection found it perfect. I did find that the shoulder stock had a slight up & down wobble. The sale associate brought out a set of screwdriver so we could remove and inspect the stock. We quickly found that the screw securing the stock was loose. Upon tightening that screw the wobble was corrected and the stock fit tight into the receiver. We found two other screws were loose and tighten them. On with the inspection. I brought some Snap Caps with me and they cycled through the rifle perfectly. The trigger was a little tight but no creep and not as bad as others has reported. I later measured the trigger pull to be under 6 lbs. The only other issue was that the lever was a little tight. All in all I found the rifle met my expectations and I purchased it.
Onto the range. I had four brands of ammo, three in 240 gr. SJSP and on in 300 gr. JHP. During the firing of 140 rounds at 50 yards I had to lower the rear sight two notches. Two of the brands of ammo had minor problem loading, five in all, while the other two brands functioned perfectly. Perhaps the rifle just need braking in. I was very happy with the rifle's performance.

A really good deer rifle legal in Indiana
Date:
My home state of Indiana only over the last few years legalized modern rifles for deer hunting, with the requirement that they only be chambered in handgun calibers, such as .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .45 Colt.
As a long-time owner of a Marlin 39A, I was naturally motivated to Marlin, and as the owner of a Ruger Blackhawk revolver in .45 Colt who owns and frequently uses all the necessary handloading equipment for that caliber, the natural choice for me to use as my first proper deer rifle was clear: A Marlin 1894 chambered in .45 Colt.
As it turns out, that specific caliber is currently on sale for this rifle, so the choice to buy it was just that much easier.
I bought a nice Hawke Varmint SF 2.5-10x44mm side focus scope and a superb Game Reaper scope mount, mounted both on my new Marlin, then went to the range.
I had used the technique of aligning the bore with the scope reticle beforehand, and my very first shot plopped exactly where I was aiming at 25 yards.
I then moved over to the 50 yard range and gradually adjusted my scope until it was hitting just over 1.5 inches high at that range, which would put my 225 grain Hornady FTX handloads dead on at 100 yards.
It put all five shots in the same hole, and from a very poor rest fired hurriedly, no less.
I'm already pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of this rifle.
The operation was also reliable and positive.
The stock is fairly plain black walnut, with the forend being a bit showier than the butt stock, but I like my gunstocks fairly restrained.
The metal finish looks very nice and even, and my only minor quibble is that the wood to metal fit on the butt stock is just slightly less close than it is on my 28-year-old Marlin 39A, especially around the underside of the receiver tang, under the lever.
However, it's not enough to be a functional problem or unsightly, but that's why I knocked one star off for the overall rating.
The rifle is short and handy, the lever is reasonably easy to cycle, and the trigger is okay for me, even though I realize that many people criticize the Marlin centerfire rifles' triggers, with Wild West Guns' "Trigger Happy" being one of the most popular dropin upgrades for these rifles.
I have no real problem with the trigger, especially when I can lob five shots inside the same hole without really putting any effort into shrinking my group size.
It's a beautiful, surprisingly accurate rifle, and I fully expect to have my first deer in the freezer come deer season, November of this year.
I'm really looking forward to carrying this rifle into the woods.

1894 .357
Date:
I purchased the 1894 .357 a few weeks ago so this is my initial impression. I've had the chance to shoot it a couple of times now. A very light and maneuverable rifle. Has the potential to do considerable damage w/ some of the Buffalo Bore or other hot rounds in .357
I've shot the HSM Bear Load 180 grain and some Remington 125 grain SP. The rifle shot both with a high degree of accuracy at close range w/ iron sights. Very little recoil with either round. With .38 Special, it's like shooting a .22 as far as recoil is concerned.
I didn't have a scientific approach when I was shooing but the rifle seemed less accurate w/ the .38 Special than w/ the .357. But, that could have been the low cost .38 Special I was using.
Cons: 1) My rifle is fairly picky about the ammo it will feed and eject reliably. I have variety of .38 special and .357 around the house that I use in my handguns. This may improve as the rifle breaks in. But, I doubt it. 2) My rifle came with the rear sight positioned way to far to the right. I had to obtain a brass punch to drift it to the center. A minor annoyance, to be sure. But, it would have put more of a novice shooter off of the gun right of of the gate.
I'm going to put a scope on it in the next couple of weeks.. This will permit me to get a better sense of the rifle's potential and I'll update this review if it reveals anything interesting.
